OpenWeb ADSL Feedback Thread (Pt2)

Was using my Access Uncapped all day today at max speed (4mb line), no issues. Never used WA so unable to comment on it.

Woah woah woah, 10 Meg uncapped for under what I pay for 4 meg at OW?! Anyone have a link to the feedback thread, can't find it in search. If it is anywhere near half max during peak, then I might jump.

How is their fair usage policy? Do about Less than 150 gigs a month.

I'm sure OpenWeb is currently revising their business model and packages - 'just a gut feeling', and will bounce back with a bang!^

IS is part of the problem - I suspect. Price of a package is meaningless, if the exchange, contention and shaping all have a negative impact on your internet experience.
IMHO - OW have a lot of work to do with their daytime speeds before they bang anything.

Can't even run a speedtest and it's 10pm!

I can, guess I'm just the exception in this thread it seems :(

BTW, for the past month I too have noticed a major decline in download speed irrespective of the protocol during office hours. About 2-3 months ago, I was still hitting 350-400kB/s during office hours no problem. Nowadays it isn't the case any more, only get about 150-170 max. I too will be monitoring the situation, hoping that it would improve. On the other hand, I don't see myself jumping ship any time soon as I'm not a person that loves change, but still, more speed during office hours would be nice in the future.

Man 150 on my 4mb uncapped GK account during the day would be historical, even on http/youtube. I usually hover at 3-60kBs across everything until the shaper falls asleep, one of the big reasons I'm moving. I don't mind mostly downloading at night, but the terrible daytime performance is unacceptable to everyone else in the household. Interesting to note: When mailing about cancelling, I got an email from Leon himself, but sadly not even a price drop would save these accounts considering the performance.

Yet every time I say pretty much the same thing I get told in polite language " I don't know what I am talking about"

If all continues at the current rate, we expect things to quieten down a bit earlier today at around 17:30.

*Holds Thumbs*
Ag come on pull the other one.
Yesterday, as if by clockwork, the file I was trying to download, suddenly got Nitrous Oxide at 5:00:00.
I am involved with the new roll-out at work, and IS is the bandwidth provider. I know a hell of a lot more now than I used to.
Part of these kinds of issues is IS, and part of it is OpenWeb... 50-50 I would say. Exchange congestion se moer, go and tell that lie to the old tannies who buy ADSL from you. That sort of thing just pisses me off because its just like City Power who spin the well-worn lie of "cable theft" when in fact its load-shedding.

So every time you say "network congestion" my brain goes "SHAPING/THROTTLING TIME".
This is one of the things that I hate about SA, treating the consumer like a trainable. I am well educated....!

Please just be honest, don't lie to me to my face.
I know you guys shape, to an extent that makes Hernshaw look like a saint. You even shape my software updates, both to Android and Apple iOS, all the tablets/phones complained this weekend about "unstable internet"

I know what shaping looks like, you won't see it with ping tests. You see it with:
* Torrents advertised as having 4000+ seeds and your torrent client can see 3 seeders and they all feed you data at like 3kbyte/sec, then at the stroke of 5pm suddenly your torrent gets a nitrous-oxide injection and your ADSL maxes out...
* I have seen this all before all over the years... the quickest test is to use a VPN..
Sorry OW... BUSTED. I'd appreciate it if you stop lying to me, and sure, I can understand if you would rather not tell everything in public, but you have the PM facility. Please, my IQ is a bit above average.

Openweb not a member of ISPA............interesting. Rogue ISP that does what it wants...........

http://ispa.org.za/membership/list-of-members/

Now to recover money from openweb as still to date after raising the issue of openweb downgrading my account there has been no honest answer.........engineer was assigned to the call 10 hours after the issue started and wanted to know how things were after 5pm........

Unfortunately the ISPA is just as toothless as ICASA.
Good luck.

What is needed is a decent ISP... preferably one that has corporate experience. Afrihost I am concerned about due to recent bad reports on this forum. WA have a bad track record.

I have noticed that lately some websites really struggle to open and/or they do not load properly. This is really nonsense and should not be happening during the day.

Best feeling ever............R 99 www.connection.co.za..............full speed.......in fact double speed for half the price. F U Openweb.

For how long? If you're paying R99 I can't see you getting full speed for more than a few days before you get the **** throttled out of you.

Openweb throttling the living daylights out of gold uncapped during office hours. Weird how our adsl goes backward day by day when the rest of the world, even crappy 3rd world countries are way better than us in delivering fast consistant adsl.

We do not throttle, we shape based on how busy the network is at any given time.

Kindly PM me with your ADSL username and the account holder details so that I can test your account during peak today

Kindly point me to my response where I denied shaping?

Hi Zewp,

Please drop me a PM so that I can see what is wrong

Do... do you need reading glasses cableguy? I am actually dumbstruck by your arrogance!

I am leaving openweb today and if asked for my reasons, I will site YOUR inability to respond to customers online as my number one issue.

Look Cableguy. I haven't got time to pick an argument on an internet forum.
The reality of this situation is, I know just as much, if not more, than you, about the product you sell me.
What really gets me is, why I and the other customers not allowed to know all the details, especially technical ones. Overseas you are allowed to know so that you can make informed decisions, they encourage this because it means then the customer can't come with his lawyers. Wise advice ne?

To be very honest, my stance is this, I am waiting for business to pick up and then I am going to get a corporate account from a reputable ISP, because I haven't got time for crap.

I went with OW in the first place because a client swore by yourselves and said you were great for Netflix and the rest... I am not so sure now, and I am not so sure the customer is so happy anymore either, because I have seen how his Logitech unit battles to stream radio stations during "business hours".

I am trying to run a business... GMail is shaped into the effing ground... it takes 2 1/2 minutes to load. Absolutely unacceptable! How the effing hell is GMail a p2p download or something that needs to be shaped?
Yet Mybroadband.co.za is not!!!!!

Screw this s**t... going to buy airtime and use my 3G dongle!!!

Nice

Lucky you... I get 1/2 that
GMail tells me it cannot display attachments due to the internet connection being unstable!!!!
I am not interested in dowloading a torrent... but stuff like internet banking, and GMail? Is that really fair???????????????????????????

Let's try and clear this very contentious point up:

Traffic shaping Traffic shaping is used to optimize or guarantee performance, improve latency, and/or increase usable bandwidth for some kinds of packets by delaying other kinds.

Functionality If a link becomes saturated to the point where there is a significant level of contention (either upstream or downstream) latency can rise substantially. Traffic shaping can be used to prevent this from occurring and keep latency in check. Traffic shaping provides a means to control the volume of traffic being sent into a network in a specified period (bandwidth throttling), or the maximum rate at which the traffic is sent (rate limiting). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traffic_shaping

Bandwidth throttling Bandwidth throttling is the intentional slowing of internet service by an internet service provider. It is a reactive measure employed in communication networks in an apparent attempt to regulate network traffic and minimize bandwidth congestion. Bandwidth throttling can occur at different locations on the network. On a local area network (LAN), a sysadmin may employ bandwidth throttling to help limit network congestion and server crashes. On a broader level, the internet service provider may use bandwidth throttling to help reduce a user's usage of bandwidth that is supplied to the local network. Throttling can be used to actively limit a user's upload and download rates on programs such as video streaming, BitTorrent protocols and other file sharing applications, as well as even out the usage of the total bandwidth supplied across all users on the network. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bandwidth_throttling
