OpenWeb ADSL Feedback Thread (Pt2)

Ok. As it turns out, OW may not be trying to **** us. Or at least, they're not trying to **** me.

The TLDR is I got a Telkom guy to change some settings on my ADSL so I could get a full 10 meg on my line, and the guy went even further and full enabled the ADSL 2+ capability of my line because someone never bothered to turn that **** on. So now I'm using my OW account and guess what? P2P still runs slow (it's daytime, that's fine), but I'm watching 480p during the day with no issues at all. Downloads which used to be 50k - 100k are now running at 300-350k. This account hasn't been like this since I got the damn thing, so OW's "routing" excuse may actually be legit.

I don't know about you guys, but you may need to put your pitchforks down. I'm putting down mine.

Sorry, but you don't understand what you're talking about. This has absolutely nothing to do with routing. It's all on the Telkom side, nothing to do with OW/IS/MTN/IPC routing. If anything, your improved speeds are due to keeping your off modem long enough for a port reset (that's what leaving your modem off for 15 - 20 minutes does), or specifically having a port reset done, which is probably what enabling ADSL2+ did.

That you are writing home about 480p on a 10Mbps line, as well as your general misunderstanding, is the epitome of Stockholm syndrome. :(

I mean no offense.

I get 720p YouTube day and night on a 2Mbit account...

*edit*

G.dmt, which you were probably on before, supports a maximum of 8Mbps. FYI.

I have had several port resets done in the past few months, as well as having my router off for extended periods of time due to power cuts. TelkomZA clearly did more than a simple port reset or my router would have been reporting otherwise for a while now.

480p at 4pm (business hours) is within my reasonable expectations for an uncapped account in South Africa. If I lived in the first world I would have higher expectations.

I was fully aware of this. If you read my full story over on the TelkomZA thread it's fairly obvious that the Telkom guy did more than a simple port reset or I would be sitting at 8 meg on G.dmt.

I'm not saying anyone else here is wrong. All I'm saying is yesterday I was running one configuration through Telkom and my OW account was ridiculously slow during the day. Telkom change things their setup and the exact same account is now functioning as well as when I first got it. This may help someone else who is in the same boat.

Let's see in a few days. Never know, it could be because you have an additional 2Mbps of downstream. But 480p on a 10Mbit line during business hours is not right. That's effectively 1/8th line speed. In my opinion, your account has never functioned well if that is what you used to get and you're now 'happy' getting it again. :(

Tell us about your account and what you pay for it?

forgive me for posting here as i am not an OW subscriber, cancelled with them over a year ago...
I had the 4mb original gold account, which worked flawlessly for about 6 months, no shaping or throttling...
in the last 3 months that i stayed with them, it all went downhill, subscribers on a silver package and gamers package were getting much better speeds than i was...
so i left and joined Afrihost, I am on the 10Mbps Business Uncapped, I have never been shaped or throttled in the past year that I have been with them, whether its torrents, nntp, streaming, all works like a dream, just thought i would share my experience thus far...

below is my latest speed test result, SAIX speed test done :
Last Result:
Download Speed: 8642 kbps (1080.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 854 kbps (106.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 52 ms

Netflix, Hulu, Twitch?

SASA Online (actually uses ISdsl user stats for IS accounts) had been verified against ISdsl user stats and are 100% accurate. it had been stated by several users on the forum recently. could only very one month as i can no longer access IS user stats but it had been 100% to the T accurate. interestingly i had verified against a third sourse as well.

I'm on a Gamers King (Downloaders Bling) account which states Downloads will be prioritized After Hours!
11PM on a Sunday, I don't think it can get much more 'after hours' than that.
Downloads at a whopping 40kBps!

Thanks for the bull**** service once again Openweb!

It's my last day. I did not bother to login this whole month. Been using a different ISP. Glad I don't have to pay OW any more.

9 Hours and 7 Minutes till freedom!!!

Just hope they don't bill me in error next month. I have a feeling I'd have a hard time getting credited shhould that happen.

Ironically, today the account has worked the best it has in ages. As of 5pm I got completely unshaped. I guess thay have some additional bandwidth to burn.
