OpenWeb ADSL Feedback Thread (Pt2)

Firstly - You get what you pay for ....
Secondly - OW are a bad choice IMHO.
Thirdly - despite their AUP - I would suggest MWEB at R239 excluding line rental.

I was actually booted from MWEB a couple of years ago for "abuse" & they still owe me money. Openweb has been good to me but I just hope that their 4mb uncapped is more of the same for me. R689 is too much for 4mb 'premium'. I think I'll give the vanilla R249 4mb a try.

You'll probably get the same performance out of that, compared to the premium offering.

LOL

MWEB and I are not mates either ...

But seriously. OW is a dead loss from an uncapped perspective.

Careful, many 'upgraded' to higher end/faster accounts with a weight of marketing behind them, only to receive much worse performance than their previous lower end/slower accounts.

He wants cheap and by reading his posts he downloads a lot so I don't see one of the cheaper accounts working out for him TBH.

I'm currently paying R299 for the 2mb 'uncapped Gold promotion' from a while back. I'm already paying for the 4mb line from Telkom, so I may as well take a 4mb product from somewhere. Even if I only get 75% out of torrents/downloads on the vanilla openweb 4mb (R249) then it's better than what I have now and the streaming should be better when I want to use it (mainly late night/early morning). As long as there's no extreme throttling/shaping/limiting then I'll be happy, but it's not worth R689 for the premium priority product.

The IC (connection.co.za) R199 4mb uncapped special works well for me. You have to enter "incredible4" in the promo code box after you checkout to get the discount. Should be super cheap if you sign up now as they do pro-rata billing and they don't have a calendar month notice like these guys, just cancel before the 25th.

This account will treat you well if you schedule your downloads overnight (0:00-6:00).

Thanks, but I can't really be arsed with scheduling downloads like that. Most current TV show torrents are released overnight & I add them in the morning. If I have to schedule downloads for 0:00-6:00 then that means I might have to wait about another 24 hours before being able to watch stuff. How does that product perform the other 75% of the time anyway? I can't really find any more information from the website.

That is why sickbeard works so damn well in SA. When the tv shows get released it still between 00:00 and 6am so you get that program to send it to sabnzbd to download it for you. No paid news server needed. Just use a couple free usenet accounts from xsusenet.com and test.xennanews.com and you are sorted. Episodes all downloaded when you wake up. Very cool tool that I only recently started using despite reading about it so much.

+1

got sabnzbd, sickbeard, couch potato, headphones and plex running on my HTPC. Everything's ez pz

Better than OW I can tell you that :p

If you're going to download during the day then this is not for you and you will be put in the naughty corner very swiftly.

+1 to Sick Beard/SABnzbd.

Another +1 to Sickbeard and SABnzbd.

The reality of uncapped in SA is this: Pay for a cheap account, expect heavy shaping. Therefore, it is up to you to maximise the usage when it is supposed to be doen - if that means no downloading during the day, fine. If your ISP doesn't deliver on the after hours bit, drop them like a sack of s**t :) That, and OW are a bunch of crooks.

I see some negative comments about openweb, but would like to ask you learned folk if an openweb account might be of use to me.

I am currently on Mweb 2mbs uncapped at R199 per month. I dont download heavy and dont exceed their 70Gb threshold on this account.

I will be cancelling this account because their usenet service will be decommissioned. I use sickbeard and Sabnzbd for scheduled downloads of tv shows. Connecting to the IS news server is critical for my choice in ISP.

I still use torrents for movies or tv shows which fail with Sabnzbd. My family stream stuff from youtube etc during normal hours.

I want to switch to the openweb 2mbs account at R149. Whats your thoughts?

Assuming you are looking to stick to your usage of around 70gigs, why not take out a capped account from Afrihost for R199 - 100gigs. Or maybe even consider Webafrica.

There is something about having to worry about checking if you have used your cap or not that puts me off going for a capped account.

I dont even check how much i use. The only reason i know about the Mweb usage was because i went on this morning out of curiosity.

But i take your point on maybe going that route.

I thought afrihost had problems these days?

Webafrica - any good?

No experience with WA. Afri has it's issues but has apparently bought additional IPC. If cost is not an option, then Crystal Web would be the ISP of choice. Perhaps ask them for pricing on a capped account? It won't be cheap, but it will be seamless, day and night.

Well I called OW this morning they fobbed me off to an email address. I reminded them that I'm a heavy user & would be happy with 75% performance off-peak for the R249 4mb product. The reply:

You will not be happy with such a move as shaping will affect your activities drastically.

...

If you do change rather go to : 4Mbps Gold Uncapped (Leon Edition) -R 589pm
OR
consider a capped account: http://openweb.co.za/home-capped-unshaped/

F*#k that sh]t! I'm not paying almost twice the price than I'm paying for a 2 year old product. Broadband is supposed to be getting cheaper. If I was in the UK I would have already been upgraded to 4mb, 8mb or whatever double your speed was for the same price.
