Openweb - Any good?

Lol. ye I can imagine some openweb fans boys would want to flame me because I had continues below average service from Openweb in the day. :P Flame ahead.

this is NOT true! read the thread before spreading ur ignorance !

daytime speeds is often appalling accross all various accs be it everyday, silver, gold, gamers bling. all marketing if you ask me. there is always such a difference between the same accounts !

I have been with Openweb for 3 and a half years now. I was on the 1Mbs Gold package and have just upgraded to the 2Mbs Gold thanks to Telkom's free ADSL upgrades. My weekday office hours speeds are OK, not full speed, but I can browse, skype and such without issues. Downloads during office hours seem to be limited to around 50% line speed, but browsing, email etc seem untouched. I download, Youtube and such with no complaints yet.

My account just works.

I have zero issues. In three years I have contacted support only twice... the 1st time to switch backbones from BCNet to IS and the second time was to request an upgrade from 1Mbs to 2Mbs.

Perhaps it depends on more your exchange and just what you need your ADSL account to do for you... ?
 
If you are going for gold, might I suggest Afrihost Business (Its guaranteed unshaped 24/7, and in my opinion, the best uncapped account in the country).

If you bundle, you will also save a bit compared to a Gold package from Openweb :)

I went this route. Was on OpenWeb Gold and it just sucked during office hours. I have a home office and work from home - so it matters.
Spent every second day bouncing emails with support.

Afrihost Business just works.

Opposite of my experience. I tried Afrihost (and the business) but it was all over the place. It's weird how everyone has a different experience with different providers, I wonder what the deal is.
 
I am SO with you on this one! Nothing can beat Openwebs Gold. It really is the only truly unthrottled account in SA. The best bit is the unshaped on weekends and in the evenings. As far as I know, NO other ISP offers so much unshapedness (does that work even exist!)

That's the issue that I have - it's not unshaped that much? When I was using it, I was shaped to oblivion in the day?

That's why I recommend AH business, as it states in words that it is fully unshaped 24/7.
 
Been to AH and cancelled within a week. Their account is simply to as unshaped as I would've liked.

The moment I put back my OW Gold details into the router, Bam, full speed. I even tried 2 different routers and lines

Leon@ openweb confirmed I am getting shaped. Sadly I do use it during the day, so don't expect to do anything but light browsing to work. During the evening it is fine so I guess if you can live with that it will be good for you.

I am at the point where I am getting a second business line installed, so 2 x2 meg lines so I can get business uncapped from telkom on it.

Why get 2 x 2mb lines lol. DSL is so cost inefficient due to line rentals (dsl + voice) why not get a faster and better account like a 4MB platinum/business account. It would make more sense to me from a financial perspective.

I know I'm sounding like a promotional person, but why don't you switch to AH Business for a month? It's guaranteed unshaped 24/7 :)

That is what I am used to with the MWEB Uncapped product, it got slow during the day, especially from around 9-11AM, but it worked.
I am just concerned that OW gets so slow or shaped during the day that nothing works and I cannot pay people, do Skype or download stuff from corporate websites.

My ADSL line itself, is very stable, it synchs at 8032kbps and it will remain up indefinitely. I unplug it when not at home due to lightning risk
