Openweb - Any good?

That is what I am used to with the MWEB Uncapped product, it got slow during the day, especially from around 9-11AM, but it worked.
I am just concerned that OW gets so slow or shaped during the day that nothing works and I cannot pay people, do Skype or download stuff from corporate websites.

My ADSL line itself, is very stable, it synchs at 8032kbps and it will remain up indefinitely. I unplug it when not at home due to lightning risk

Firstly .... I am only too happy to see that you are boycotting Throttlebug Hershaw and Scumral .... It shows that you are decent citizen with high moral standards like myself .....:D

Secondly I am now with OW. They have a shaping protocol - apparently - that monitors day time useage and adapts accordingly .... so its not great, but not bad. After hours and on guaranteed unshaped weekends ... the best a man can get. That aside the technical team is small enough to build a relationship with and they are really quite a lekker bunch.

Well, during business hours I don't download torrents... because I am used to not doing it from my experience with MWEB. Earlier in the year... around March-May... torrents were throttled to hell during the day... and would only run after 9-10pm. Besides, torrents are old now... I use http for most everything. I also do what is known as M2M communications, that is, a lot of stuff where machines talk to my PC over vanilla TCP sockets with user-defined port numbers.

Another reason why I don't do torrents during business hours is because it creates headaches when you're trying to debug network applications and are using wireshark, the log becomes overwhelmed with packets that have no relation to the needle you're searching for in the haystack.

I will be giving OW a try very shortly.

I'm not a download hog so my torrents would run as and when I need something.
Telkom Internet has a similar rule, torrents seem to run nicely after 00h00 to 06h00, based on the feedback from members on this forum.

B. Might be an option but that purely depends on the price.

Price is high. Worth it though if you run a business :)

Is openweb any good for torrenting?

I have a Standard Uncapped account and torrents run at 30 - 50% line speed. After 5 things pick up nicely. These accounts are discontinued though and I guess the new Everyday uncapped accounts are a little worse than this and the Silver special account should run better than this. http://openweb.co.za/special.html. Hurry if you want the special though...

Thanks mate, will look into this option right away.

I just left Afrihost, I have a 10mbps line and I am looking for a new ISP.

I download on average 200 to 250 gigs per month and streaming and gaming is very important to me.

Any recommendations? I paid 900 for the bundle but willing to pay about 600 just for the account.

No ways I am touching Afrihost again. I have had it with them and their horrible service.

I am looking for a good alternative.

Openweb gold will be the alternative for you - but if you are paying for that, you might as well pay for AH Business. But, youve made your choice to leave :P Im not going to question that

Did you try the business account? No reason why you would need support if you did.
With OW Gold, I was interacting either support every second day. Literally had to nurse my account. With AH business, it is just there. Great Internet 24/7 and I don't need to pop emails off anywhere to query speeds every 48 hours.

I agree 120%, It really is the best account in SA!

I did not make the choice to be honest. Afriman did it for me and closed my account with them as well as move my line back to telkom all without any request to do so from my side.

The gold and business accounts are more than what I would like to pay though and thats the problem.

Besides, it was never a shapi g issue with afrihost but rather a poor service issue.

Aha, I see! Strange of him to do so? Anyway... moving on... ask for an Everyday Uncapped Trail from Openweb, it would probably suit your needs. You will be shaped in the day but unshaped after 7pm
