Openweb - false advertising?

Well, you might want to consider that there are now 200 very happy people with cheap new accounts, and a couple of thousand people pissed off because they wasted their time applying for a special that didn't have its limitations clearly stated.

And that 1000 people would not have emailed even if the limitation was stated? They would all have sent an email to see if they got lucky and make it before the accounts ran out.

The point is that it doesn't. The time they 'lost' would have been lost anyways.

If you ended up with a lottery ticket with tonight's winning numbers, only to be informed on Monday that only people who bought tickets at the Shell garage in Empangeni between 9:00 and 14:00 on Tuesday were eligible, you'd be pissed. A hyperbole to be sure, but the principle is the same. To boot, this principle is set out in legislation.

Stop trying to make excuses - there are none.

The difference is the people who bought the lottery ticket paid money to get it, so in the end they still lost. The people who sent emails to Openweb didn't lose any money.

The only way your analogy could work was if the lottery tickets were provided free of charge and delivered right to your doorstep.

I'm not trying to make any excuses. I'm showing why the people pushing for 'herp herp CPA derp' are being stupid. Yes, Openweb made a mistake. Yes, they can be held accountable for it. But why? Openweb admitted to the mistake and has said that they would ensure it didn't happen again. Is that not good enough now? Would people prefer to force Openweb to honor the mistake and have them give possibly 100s of people accounts at a loss?

We live in a dog eat dog world, but does that mean everyone should live like that just because the next person is doing it? Should we really demonize a company which does so much for the ADSL in our country just for a single mistake? Just because we're pissy because we didn't get in on dat thang?

A company made a mistake, nobody lost any money from it, what's the big deal if they promised not to let it happen again?

Is it fun being an ass?

lol @ all the crybabies :D

A man goes out onto the street and starts handing out sweets and drinks for people to enjoy.

When they are all gone the other people who arrived late crap on him and swear at him and threaten to destroy his business!

Typical.

Obviously their promises don't mean much.

If the guy promised stuff for the whole day, then sure :D. Otherwise those cheapskate can go stuff themselves :p.

Clarity is the issue even with Openweb.

Please point me in the direction where the error was admitted. The responses from MrBeep were arrogant and condescending and came off as people being idiots that couldn't comprehend the nature of the email sent out, when "a sorry, we messed up and couldn't offer the product as was stated and limited it to 200 accounts only" would suffice. They changed their mind after they couldn't cope with response. MrBeep stated that the error won't happen again, as if limited accounts was their original intention.

There are three Steers outlets within 5 kms of my work place.

But if they were all out, I would go to another fast food place.

Steers doesn't usually give their food away free though, so I don't really see the comparison.

Sure, but is it really going to matter very much five minutes after death?
There will be another special along shortly.

Neither is Openweb.

I see public forum crucifixion is still the preferred method when someone nay say openweb. Nothing has changed since the days of ODS ;)

The OP has a point and if there was no mentioning of the fact that there was only 200 units, but clearly says it ends at day X starting on day Y, then there is fault.

That is clear as day. Now to the obvious, it's quite funny to see how people quickly miss that part and proceed the public stoning of the OP due to blaspheming against openweb :D

I'd bet the picture would be different as mentioned be the ISP mweb...

:edit
And this is the official response?
Hi Mr V,
To paint a picture mildly, myself and my admin staff were very busy this morning!

Ja I always imagined Gary to be a stickler for the fine print. Bet if it were Cybersmart he would have a lot to say. Hey Gary. Bit inconsistent there mate.

Don't they say that fanatic love is blind :)

I'd put this to ASASA even if it's mweb or webafrica. No one part their following is above advertising shenan1gans*.

*oops there is a naughty word in there lol

While a company obviously has the right to limit any special offers, openweb erred in not mentioning it in their individualised email to their customers.

An apology or a follow up email explaining the limitation or indicating that the offer was closed would have prevented this unhappiness.

Exactly, but yet the true colors was shown.

Now you can pick a cross out and report for public forum crucifixion
