Of course there is shaping and of course its a best effort service i get that. But paying close to R400 for 20k/s and unable to open Gmail is ridiculous. Then i log a query, get sent a new username, 10 days later same situation.

And if you read the posts ion the openweb thread, this IS the norm and NOT the exception

Hi Rakabos3,

I had the very same experience as you, Openweb 4mb gold uncapped...I was told by MrBeep that it is dynamic shaping, I can understand that, everything was so slow during the day, emails, google, after 5pm back to full speed...
So, I decided that this product has no longer suited my needs and handed in my cancellation...
I did receive a new username and password close to 4 times...
I am not bashing anyone here, just sharing my experience...

Mr Beep, it would appear as though these Gold accounts are doing OW more harm than good from a PR point of view....

Whats the point of Gold, besides being unshaped 20 minutes earlier than Silver, if the Gold accounts get shaped just as heavily as the others?

I think OW needs to take this matter to IS as its killing your good rep

I honestly think that Gold is like a placebo pill.

In other words, if Vanilla doesn't work fine for you then Gold won't either. I'm convinced that they're one and the same.

Honestly it seems that way as the people complaining the most are on Gold, yet the Silver and Vanilla users are quiet. Is that because the Silver and Vanilla users expect slow speeds but the Gold users are expecting faster speeds??

Is IS selling OW Gold accounts at Standard priority???

What a conundrum....

EDIT: I personally am with Ti, its not Gold or even Silver but it works fine for me, in fact juding by the sound of things I'm better off using Ti at half the price. I dont intend on downloading the internet ever (just a few linux distros and xbox backups :whistle:) so the throttling dont scare me.

And you also get Vanilla users that seem to have better accounts than Gold... It was quite depressing having a crappy Gold account and a Vanilla guy saying "Hey, I get full speed 24/7 ROLFCAKE".

How the fudge is that even possible? Gold 4MB costs almost twice as much as Vanilla 4MB. Its easy to see why the Gold users are getting pissed. At twice the price I'd expect some very lenient shaping policies on my Gold account!

Shaping is always going to be present, everyone should expect that unless you are on an unshaped account...
But when your line is shaped to 50Kb/s on a 4meg line, that is heavy shaping and should not be the norm on a 4mb line regardless of what you doing on the internet...
If you dowloading via nntp then half the line should be shaped during business hours, the same would apply to torrents...
At least that is what I would expect to be happening....
 
So when something is on promotion and doesn't say "original" that means it's something else?

Yeah, makes sense. No wonder that KFC tasted so weird.
 
I would have to agree with efitol, there were numerous occasions where Vanilla users and Gamer King account users were pretty much enjoying an unshaped account experience and the Gold account users experienced the exact opposite, well not all of the gold users...

Here's the thing... we aren't. I just did a variety of downloads to show my download speeds on my 1mb Gold account. It's running on a 2mb line, so not only is it full speed, it's actually currently bursting. This is the middle of business hours.

Those are amazing results and they are a pretty normal experience on a Gold Uncapped account. People experiencing 20kb/s or 50kb/s during business hours are fringe cases. They are not the norm, so I don't know why people insist on saying that that kind of experience is the norm for a Gold Uncapped user. It's not.

It has been the norm in my case. Then a new account, its fine for a few days, then back to crawling. My account was reset earlier today and now its fast again. So its definitely not my imagination. Lets see how it goes the next few days

The norm for you, not for all Gold Uncapped users.

You're lucky. I am on Gold 6mbps (Original), and right now browsing the web is a painful experience. Sigh...
Not going through support though. Been back and forth with support for months now and kind of over it. Only real way I see of resolving it is to work at night and sleep during the day.
 
@Mike Smit - Mike, just drop [email protected] an email stating you want a new account. I was in your exact same position this morning with painful speeds. Got my new account details within 20min and am now really quick again.

@Zewp Quite correct. I have had 4MB Gold Original Uncapped for close on 2 years now and have only requested a new account 2 times. Downloading during the day (NNTP) is generally a no go but I am more the OK with that.

@Zewp - That NZB download of yours, is that international or local?

I was the same - Except when I mailed support I would always get the mail back saying that there was nothing wrong with my account and it was running fine. Was only getting around 40 - 60kb/s during the day and some days everything timed out. So I signed up with Afrihost Business account. Unshaped and uncapped 24/7 and that is guaranteed that it will not change. Have not looked back since :).

You have no idea how many times I have liaised with support (and received new accounts sometimes) over this issue.
Sometimes they say "I am using your account right now and getting full line speed" which leaves me with no-where to turn. Other times they reset it, and sometimes I get a new account. So so so tired of going through this process dude.

Funny you say that. Just after my previous post I emailed Afrihost asking them about their business uncapped and if they can guarantee that it will function well no matter the hour of the day.

MrBeep loaned me an account 2 weeks back to use while they testing and fiddled with my own account. Whatever account that was is how internet should be. Zero complaints from me the whole week. And again - not downloading. Just general usage. Why Gold can't function like this 24/7 I don't know.
