Hi guys,

I'm moving house soon and am looking into getting an Openweb account (probably 4mbps). I see on their site that the Vanilla option is significantly cheaper than the Standard/Silver/Gold options. Is there any particular reason for this? Is the Vanilla account more subject to shaping or is there some other reason it's so much cheaper?

Basically, would I be fine going with Vanilla or the Standard accounts on special right now, or are the Silver/Gold accounts significantly better to justify their higher prices?

I'd suggest a Standard or Silver. If you've got money to burn or really need redundancy then Gold obviously (or Platinum, for completeness sake).

I'm going to be using the account primarily for downloads and online gaming. Is the Standard good enough for those purposes or is there a heavy amount of shaping?

Stay away from standard if you need your connection usable during office hours.
I recently upgraded to silver because I could not take it anymore. I work from home so need my connection functional.
They were running a 2 for 1 special on silver so I gave the other to my Dad.

Yeah with standard my nntp is blocked during the day , hardly load speedtest, though the first 2 days it was ok , not to worrying afterhours it goes full speed.

That would be okay if it was just torrents and NNTP that was shaped/throttled/... The problem is EVERYTHING is slow. Loading simple web pages can take forever is the network is busy and they have decided to shape your line.
Most days it was okay until about 10H00. I could feel the slow down from 10H00 onwards and generally by lunch it was barely usable. By 17H00 or so things picked up again. I kept an Afrihost account as backup for this.
Since being on Silver I am happy. I don't need downloads running during the day, but I must be able to use the net. On Silver I can. Much happier.

Yeah, I recently asked exactly this question and then managed to get a Standard account on trial for 2 days. It was good but not great. Not worth changing from Mweb. So I went for the Gold special. Still testing - very happy but the jury's still out on torrents (only got the account yesterday morning and torrents were weird last night. GOnna test more soon.)
In the meantime, here's a download speedtest from earlier. (HTTP)

That a regional issue. My NNTP cruises at a solid 50%+ during business hours. Browsing etc feels normal. In fact I rarely see <75% on anything at any time. All on std uncapped (Gamers special specifically).

Perhaps my ADSL line was just blessed by the gods. :D
