OpenWeb is Bandwidth Sharing

Na, dont get me wrong - OpenWeb's service is awesome, but I had something similar a few months back when they used to send out their "mid month specials"!

Took an uncapped account special....turned out even simple web browsing was so so so slow...logged into the usage section, and picked up that from the 1-16th over 40GB was already downloaded on that account. About 4GB was being downloaded daily from the 16th onward - and when logging in there was another user logged in in CPT. There was 2 days where that other user was not logged in, and all was well....until it slowed again and after checking that same CPT user was logged in.

Mailed MR Beep on the 25th out of pure disappointment - who then sent me new login details, and all was hunky dorey. Made me never consider an uncapped acount with them ever again though! Could have been an honest mistake, but that suspicion never left the back of my mind. Use their normal accounts all the time - they run perfectly though!

Like some other also said here, if you know the first thing of ISP's and routers then you would know that the username and password in your router was input there by YOU. So if the router username and password has changed then it could NOT be OpenWeb but someone in the shop, again, YOU.

OpenWeb only gave you login details, YOU have to put them in the router to connect to the internet.

If OpenWeb changed the username/password without YOUR knowledge, then you would not have been able to connect to the internet at all. PERIOD!

On my normal Local Only Openweb account all has been fine since I starting using them last year...

But this problem appears to be solely related to "uncapped" accounts....

Also demand that Openweb lock the account to a specific phone line. That way the only access to that account would be from your shop. Any connections from elsewhere would then be easily identifiable as problematic.

I have had the same problem. Got my account (1GB fiber int and 1GB local) next day I actually want to use the account for the first time and it was capped. I phoned them and they told me that I have used up all my bandwidth. Im like what? I didnt even connect so they told me I live in germinston and I dont I live in Richards Bay and they told me I used up all my bandwidth from Germenston.???????
They did give me another account though. But it was kinda shocking

How it works is that an ISP will purchase a certain number of gigs as a reseller from a bandwidth provider, they then have various packages themselves setup from that bandwidth allocated. (5gig, 10gig etc.)

The scenario could be as follows; ISP has a test account, which users who have problems with their connection can use (temporarily) while their 'real' username is being fixed. They could have given your username to a client who has had problems with their account, and so inadvertently caused the associated username to be capped.

Usernames are created automatically, because Datapro (ODS used), would create it, and send it through to reseller. The ISP can ask the bandwidth provider to create a new one and relay that to you as your new address.

I know this because I used to work at ODS, the system they used could have resulted in a mix up like that, but thankfully the guys were good enough to not make that mistake.

As for the problem first stated in this thread, it is unlikely that such a mistake can be proven by the client. I suggest you ask the ISP to mail the connection made during the period, and to do a 'trace' to the mac address associated at the time. This is however, very difficult to do, but not impossible.

I suggest a sternly worded request to have your username & password changed.

My 2c.

It's funny I saw this, my mom came home today and she said there was a guy on his phone SCREAMING at a ISP about how one minute he had BW for his business, and the next minute he had none and the way he explained it on the phone, my mom says he was accusing the place of stealing BW.

Maybe this guy was screaming at someone at OpenWeb! haha.

Umm that could just be plain simple bandwidth theft...someone with a ip/port scanner and u with ur router login set on default

Or the latter would be phishing of ur login details...either from, their side or ur side. I've heard nothing but good stuff from openweb for 2 years...I really dont think they would just kick over what they built for making a double sale of 1gig...coz thats like smashing their rep for R60...

Sometimes Mrbeep replies fast when he's around, sometimes not but I think he would look into it first hand....

ps I still support webafrica! :D

i would place the bucket at IS's doors, mrBEEP seems really sincere and trying his best and working himself to the bone to get us some sort of good adsl packges - i might not agree with him or be his customer but thats how i see it.
.
mr Beep contact details

can anybody tell me how to check monthly usage on the uncapped express accounts and where to go ?
