I am on a gold uncapped package, have been since day one. This account usually runs full speed day and night on a 384k line. Been having some issues lately, which have been sorted out.

Yesterday, the account was really slow, and Keoma moved me to another network, saying that is my new account from now on. Ran perfect, then from 7 am it slows to 15k/s. I sent an e-mail to query this, and Keoma says the account is like that, shaped during the day, and they need to make a small profit every now and then.

Not a very fair way of doing this without a warning?

Hello,

You are on a shaped service P2P, torrents and similar. As explained to you via email, nothing has changed, Gold has always been a shaped service.

You have not indicated what is running slowly. If it is HTTP or similar, there is a fault. If it is torrents or P2P, it is slower during the day because that is the product you have bought.

Please communicate the details through to me on this thread.

Kind regards
MrBEEP

I specifically moved to the gold account ages ago because the normal accounts were shaped to hell.

The gold account was never shaped during the day before, all of a sudden the official stance is we need to make profit now and then?

Oh, and it's the news server that is slow.

Hi Zoltan,

We must make a profit, otherwise we will be out of business. The network is now setup correctly. Shaping is not enforced during the day. It depends on how busy the network is. Right now, the network is busy, thus P2P and torrents will receive the lowest priorities.

Why not get yourself a 384k Uncapped Unshaped account for R499? (R100 discount)

I have emailed you a Gold Uncapped, Unshaped Test account.

I have been on the 384k gold account for 3 months now, always been superb. Loving the service at Openweb.

It was always said that the Gold accounts are still shaped, just not as much as the normal accounts. My gaming latency is superb, and downloads at night are great too.

ty Openweb

You should of just tried it out(Trial acc)... you had nothing to lose

Im with Openweb Gold 4meg and love it. Shaped during the day, upto full speed at night with Torrents and Rapidshare. No complaints this side. Http is full speed during the day. Not sure why you ever thought the Gold accounts were unshaped?

Indeed, complaining when shaping is actually happening now when it didn't used to,when it was specified in the sign-up that it's shaped puts you squarely in the "wrong" box.

We used to get 100gig+ Local on our 20gig IS accounts, now that it hardcaps at 20gig it sucks but technically we were getting more than we paid for ;)

Well I am complaining for 1 simple fact: it was always running full speed, day and night. I moved up from the standard service because that account was doing what this 1 is doing now.

If I move up now to the next account, whats to say that it won't be shaped like this 1 in 3 months time?

It's not that I don't want to pay, I used to pay R219,ran at full speed most of the time, then that started slowing down. Moved to R318, which was fine for 4 months, then it starts to slow down.

What next?

Have you tested with a capped account to see if you get similar speeds throughout the day and at night ? If that's the case, then perhaps your exchange or Telkom might be at fault here instead of Openweb.

Tried it with a normal account, the speeds are perfect.

The gold account now behaves exactly like my regular uncapped used to after a while, pathetic during the day, and only speeds up after 8.

Ask to be moved to a different backbone. Some providers shape more harshly than others.

Well on the backbone I have moved to, even browsing international is a joke during the day.

Gorgeous innit?

Local ain't much better, especially the latency.

If this is gold, I feel sorry for the guys on the standard package.

I'm moving out of home soon and into a flat in newlands. Thinking of getting an openweb 384 uncapped account. But I'm not entirely sure what would be the right package for me. Obviously don't want to spend more than I have to, being a student, but its unclear, without strict numbers, what account I should get. For example, the lite account talks about great latency for gamers (my main priority) but warns that I will get shaped if I fall into the top 20% bracket of downloaders. What are the normal numbers?

I download about 15gb a month, maybe up to 25 on a heavy month. Will I get shaped to hell with this? Furthermore is it only the torrents and p2p stuff that get shaped but not my gaming (world of warcraft et al.) and browsing?
