OpenWeb uncapped ADSL R99 upgrade

Sounds good.

".....allowing their 314 Kbps and 512 Kbps uncapped ADSL subscribers to upgrade their accounts "

Is this 314 a new product? LOL, they are already throttling it.

Edit: I see they fixed it.

They state good speeds throughout the day, is that a admission that they are artificialy creating slow speeds? I'm not talking about p2p or downloads, technicaly web browsing on both accounts should be exactly the same. If not.....

Just sent their sales department a e-mail on the 512k account with a few questions pertaining this specific account.

I'll post back here when I get feedback.

i have problem with this at the very bottom

"We have created a VPN to bypass Telkom's Dynamic IP system. A user will be furbished with an ADSL username which they will place into their router.

The user will then connect to a secure VPN using any modern Operating System to gain access to their Static IP. The advantage is, a user will not need to connect to the VPN to do perform their general internet duties, only when they want to physically point their Static IP to their account." says Keoma Wright, Founder of OpenWeb.co.za

how many vpn connections can i make ? if it is one then this is pretty much useless as how am i to share one vpn between more than one user. do one pc then have to be on 24.7 if the service i guess going with the previous vpn *** doesn't properly support pptp/l2tp...

Good compromise.

Still staying with SAOL though. Their R499 384 uncapped all inclusive deal yields ~85GB a month. Still waiting to hear what people are managing on these other packages.

If you want a full static IP Adress get the business class 512k Package from Mweb for only a few bucks a month more, which will give you FULL unshaped and 5 Static IP adresses without having to use VPN.

This is obviously a tailored made package, and if it doesn't suit your needs maybe look elsewhere. One cannot ONLY vote with one's wallet, sometimes picking the right PRODUCT instead of the cheapest is the best way forward. I'm not saying you can't have both but it's an ever changing market and accounts like these obviously serve their purpose.

That's just the thing some people aren't interested in the amount or QUANTITY of bandwith they can do on these accounts, but rather the QUALITY. I play online games 80% of the time I use my ADSL so good QUALITY bandwith / low ping are what I'm after, not necessarily the downloading.

bull****. running it through vpn is not good imho.

You only need the VPN for the static IP adress, otherwise you'll get a Dynamic IP adress as per normal ADSL users. Did you even bother to read a bit more about the product before slandering it?

From their website:

This is not the standard static IP's I was thinking of. So be careful, this smells of marketing gimmicks. One could just fire up hamachi on a std un-static line and achieve what they are "promoting".

Just recieved this e-mail response from them!

Hi Pieter

I would like to thank you for your email!

1. Can I have the package without the static IP? The semi-shaped access is more what I need rather than the static IP, I primarily play online games on my ADSL and I need good QUALITY bandwidth and not necessarily QUANTITY. Yes you may. At signup, please select the 512k Consumer Uncapped account for R299. You will then be offered the Gold upgrade. Select the Upgrade. You will now be able to get Gold without Static IP. Total cost: R398
2. I’m currently a Webafrica Customer on a 4mb line (which only syncs at 1024k), would it be possible to move my existing line over to Openweb and downgrade to a 512k package? Im afraid due to Telkom's terrible service, we do not provide line rental. I would suggest getting the line directly with Telkom, or keeping just the line portion with your current ISP.
3. What is the cost associated with the 512k Gold Semi Shaped Account As seen above.
4. What is the fair usage policy (FUP) or acceptable usage policy on this specific account . It is the Standard AUP. Abusers will have P2P and torrents shaped. Thats all. It will never be killed, just shaped more intensely. We have not had to do this yet though.
5. Is there any rolling windows and will any throttling be applied once I reach a certain amount of usage? NO!
