Can someone plz explain what VB backbone is? I'm looking for a new ISP & want to know what people are talking about a R496 package. I cant seem to find anything on their website

no its gold package R738, the vb is the backbone of what network run on, there is different ones to choose from, different has different speeds on certain protocols.

If the account has altech in the username, which backbone is it? How many others are there?

Then its altech backbone they have their own, iirc Vodacom, Internet Solutions and bcs network

Anyone having unstable download speed on the IS backbone? Everything seemed to be running fine until 10:30 but now my download speed had dropped to 0-5kbs on direct downloads (384 standard uncapped).

Not sure about speed, but two usenet downloads have come down corrupted as all hell this morning. Will have to redo them. (yes, pars are broken as well). Not annoyed enough to shake my fist in the air just yet though.

Local ping is very high.

International is also higher than usual. Speedtest is useless since it gives a constant speed spikes one time and then gives a wrong result. Before the spike local down was about 9kbs and international was about 21kbs.

EDIT: Website loading is also extremely slow.

I've had unusual problems through last week up to now. Keoma has fixed, but i'm not accustomed to anything going wrong. Speeds are also very strange, erratic at best. Then speedtest shows D/L at 50kb, but actual D/L is 340kb +. Pings up at 617ms to VB Joburg. Very strange. Hopefully it will stabilise by the time PSN is back up.

What's your usage for this month?

I simply think that the threshold has been hit... (the top20%) but obviously I hope I'm wrong and that the speed returns to normal very soon (I too am getting slow intl speeds, ok local, which in my experience is due to the top20%).

I think MrBeep is away on leave. Intl browsing has been terrible last few days. Timeouts etc. Tried to download PS3 update, and failed 3 times via Http. Could have been server overload as well though.

Please show me where you see anything about the top 20% on the STANDARD uncapped packages... The 20% thing is only on the lite Uncapped packages. And even when the 20% thing kicks in on that package your latency is not affected, only your download speed. I'm having an issue with both download speed and latency.

I sent a mail asking for a port reset to MrBeep but still haven't gotten a reply.

I just checked my latency and it's not really out of the ordinary. It's slightly (maybe 10%) higher than normal.

Two months ago my download speed went to pieces and I emailed OW and asked if there was something wrong. They informed me that I had hit the 20% top users bracket (yes, on STD uncapped). I was rather miffed that they do not advertise this on the website. I do know that there are one or two other ISP's that do mention it though.

Doesn't sound right, but anyway. Its not cause I'm in the 20% at the moment I am not even getting 1kbs on direct downloads...

Ok, maybe you have a physical line issue then.

This is an extract of emails between me and OW wrt the Std and the 20%.

Greetings

Your in the top 20% of users so IS are rate limiting you.

Ah, ok thank you.

I was never aware that the standard accounts are under the same rule as the light.

Kind regards
