2.4Kb dl speed, downloading Netlimiter on a 4mb GOLD package with IS backbone.

Is this normal?

Ooops...

My BCS OpenWeb 384 has just died.. :( ... authenticates but can do nothing, go nowhere.

Rebooted router and same problem.

I am on * cough * Cybersmart * sigh * now.

After seeing so many problems and experiencing it myself after only 8 days on Openweb, I'm seriously contemplating jumping ship to M-Web. (just a pity about the 30days notice, then again, I did not fill in an application form or anything)

My torrents at home is not downloading at all. I'm on the IS backbone. I was on BCS and VB before with similar problems. My Cybersmart connection was much more stable. Pity I left them.

I have just hopped on to my Afrihost backup.

Cybersmart... pfffffft... refresh, reload, retry ... the same old rubbish since May.

OpenWeb has been fine. This is the 1st issue really with me, albeit 8 days into the month. With OpenWeb thus far everything has worked, or it hasn't like now. No guessing or faux troubleshooting router, line, pc, etc. Either online or off.
With CS, it would kinda like almost work, then would, then kinda like almost stutter and stagger... reboot, reconfigure, follow helpdesk instructions and all for absolute nothing.

I will retry OW now... It will probably be resolved already.

That is the difference...

EDIT: OpenWeb back up... all OK again. ;} yay!

What speed and account are you on?

Torrents are always an issue unless you are on an unshaped account. The more users that start moving to uncapped packages, the heavier the effect of the shaping is going to become. I think there are two options that would save you a lot of hassle:

1. Stop using torrents completely and rather subscribe to a paid news server and good indexing site (best option, though it will cost you a bit extra).
2. If you really want to use torrents, get yourself a service like DownStorm. Its more secure and you can download the files using plain http (also costs a little extra).

If you go the news server route, move over to the VB backbone - it is the most friendly for this purpose.

If you don't want to go either of these routes, why not get yourself a capped account instead? Obviously this will depend entirely on how much you want to download, but it will be the better option if you want full speed all the time.

I averaged about 80GB per month the last 12 months. Mainly TV series that is downloaded. So capped is too expensive.

Go ahead, nobody is stopping you. More bandwidth for us to consume.

Quick question regarding the IS backbone on openweb gold, are they shaped during business hours? as streaming is dead for me atm.

Edit: Tried downloading something via http and getting 30kB/s (4mb line)

Yes, the Gold Shaped accounts are shaped.

i am getting 30-40KB on my 4mb from downstorm :( first time doing the standard 4mb package and have done 27GB so far and it dosent look good

1 week with OW and I'm going to be reduced to tears :P Can't use torrents, or any other p2p for that matter. So I finally found what I needed as a Fileserve download (which you cant use download managers with). 400Mb into a 600Mb download and now my international seems to have gone down. Bye-bye download. I could spit blood I'm so pissed off. Been trying all week to get this file.
I still got access to mybroadband (local?) - anyone else battling?

ok so it's just come back, to bad about the download I guess #@!$%#$@^#$%^@

Im also having problems. Getting very slow speeds. Got switched from IS to VB and then to Altech. Altech performed better but it's really bad with news servers. Not getting much speed. Had a great 7 days and today it's gone to hell. Using my backup free account from afrihost I get full speed so it's not my line or anything. Hopefully this will get sorted out soon.

I'm still going strong on my 4Mbps Gold. Never been happier!

You should try Jdownloader. Its a download manager that supports most of the major file sharing sites.

I can say that the service I am getting from Keoma at Openweb is really excellent. He has sorted the problem out for me and I am getting full speed once again. Thanks Keoma and keep up the good work!

Just got back to my flat, and set up the new standard uncapped ADSL I got from openweb on special this week. So far it's horrible. I knew the standard uncapped wasn't going to be outstanding, but I can't get speeds above 10kbs in Steam. I'm giving this account until the end of the month, and if things continue like this, I'm cancelling it and moving back to Mweb in September. I can't afford Gold on my student budget, but I can't afford to have cripplingly slow internet like this either.

Edit: Okay, it's randomly spiking now. One moment it's going at 34kbs, the next it drops down again. Not too shabby, as it's no longer downloading at a crippling pace. I retract my previous accusations unless it happens again, and/or happens constantly that I get stuck below 10kb/s.
