I paid about R400 last month on extra bandwidth, and the only reason I could afford it was because I had some leftover birthday money. :/ I had to get uncapped somewhere. At least the connection isn't that bad now. Been playing a bit of MW2 multiplayer (community sucks btw, probably not playing it again. ever), and I'm getting decent latencies. There's times where for about a minute I'll suffer badly from latency, then it bunces up again. Will see how the throttling on this account works once I start digging into my significant backlog of steam games, then make a decision from there.

I feel I don't have the right type of account for what downloading the interwebz

Month two with open web has been the pits. I moved from the normal uncapped (last month,(super downloads) to the gold and to be honest I'm not impressed. Don't get me wrong the quality of the bandwidth is very good, you tube and normal patches for blackberry or graphics cards flies down.P2P is dead

The problem is the kids, myself included are doing a fair bit of P2P.

Now the questions is that for R800.00 :

Gold Uncapped Unshaped is 100% unshaped, with no limits. Full speed access all day
Do the uncapped gold unshaped let you download 24/7 and are not soft capped no matter what ? or should I stick to buying 30 GB bundles ?
Please chime in if your on the Gold Uncapped Unshapped and that they are just that.....

#Keoma is super at trying all aspects to sort stuff out.

#The money that goes to downstorm account should just rather go into your ' Uncapped ADSL ' type of account you have purchased. M2C

why not get a 4mb shaped gold? you will get much more done on 4mb gold then 512k unshaped.

i know somewhere posted you already had 4mb line if i remember correctly.

Email Keoma and ask him to fix it for you.

If the gold 1 mb I have can't preform I don't think the 4mb will be any better.

Definitely take the 4Meg shaped and asked to be put on IS. If you still want 1meg take the GOLD PLUS.

Are torrents supposed to be blocked entirely on the standard uncapped? I know it says they get throttled, but mine aren't downloading at all, and I've been struggling to get http downloads working most of the morning already.

Edit: Also, seeing as I don't have access to the CP at all, this being a 'special' account (something I wish was outlined when I signed up), is there a way to monitor bandwidth usage?

Yeah, but I mean like checking how much I've used end of the month or something? Does networx save that information? The main reason I want it is to check how much use I get out of the uncapped to decide whether I should continue or just get a bigger capped account.

A question please to the guys in the know?

First things first. I currently use my connection for downloading from Downstorm, surfing, playing World of Warcraft and the odd streaming here and there.

Currently I am on the VB backbone, this is great for downloading as I get almost constant full speeds day or night(well upto +-2 weeks ago anycase). Surfing and streaming seems fine. Playing Wow is ok the only problem is that the latency is higher than on IS and a helluva lot more inconsistent. Previously I was on IS, surfing, streaming and downloading during the day was non-existant.

Could or would you guys please suggest which of the backbones used by Openweb is more suited to my usage trend? I know probably not one backbone will do great on everything.

Thanks

Yeah, I'd be interested too in which backbone for:

8am-6pm:
  • Just http surfing, but need a decent latency to intl sites (work)

7pm-12am:
  • local game servers (tf2, bfbc2 etc)
  • small about of nntp (at most a gb)
  • World of Warcraft
  • general web surfing and youtube

12am-7am:
  • nntp only

Anyone else having problems on the VB backbone ?

Browsing is top notch, speedtest not so good: http://www.speedtest.net/result/1380440998.png

And NNTP is downloading at 200-250kB/s :(

MrBeep gave me another account to try, got even worse performance with that. Don't know what's acting up, doubt its on my exchange, will test with my afrihost free account and see what I get.

EDIT:

Just tested it out with my free Afrihost 1GB account: http://www.speedtest.net/result/1380446175.png

Definitely not a problem on my side then.

NNTP: 920-960kB/s :D

Hoping my VB account will just give me constant 380- 400kB/s speeds, then I'll be a happy camper.

IS Gold 4Mb/s: Today I'm getting full line speed locally, but international is throttled to about 40KB/s (on any protocol). Anyone else experiencing this?

Last week I was getting at least half the line speed during the working day.

Local:

Test conducted on Mon Jul 11 2011 14:44:33 GMT+0200 (South Africa Standard Time)

Download Speed: 3484 kbps (435.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 405 kbps (50.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 86 ms

International:
Test conducted on Mon Jul 11 2011 14:49:41 GMT+0200 (South Africa Standard Time)

Download Speed: 366 kbps (45.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 363 kbps (45.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 307 ms

I am getting the same, my 4m is running very slow. I don't know if it is shaping. On my Afrihost which is also IS I am getting full speed. (1gb capped account)

After hours uncapped, R899 per month on IS...
