Openweb Uncapped Feedback

Heh, downloading at 1kb/s via http again on the IS backbone. I'll assume this is throttling, right?

Gettin 2kbs today.... Also on the IS backbone on 1mbs standard uncapped. If this is throtteling just for throtteling's sake, its gone way too far.

When does OpenWeb debit your account? I need to make a decision on whether I want to keep using the service, and I don't want to have to pay for September as well if I decide not to. Download speeds of 250 bytes per second, no matter if you're throttled or shaped, is not acceptable for me, as it renders services like MyUnisa etc useless. I can't wait 40 minutes for a 2mb pdf to download.

Looks like your getting hit even worse than I am. It wasn't like this in the past so I don't know what is going on. I'm too afraid to send my account details and ask for support as I fear I'll be put on another backbone.

Can anyone indicate what backbone the current R249 384k gold special is on? I assume you will not be moved from here either, correct?

But I'm getting irritated by the 10kbs I get during the day on a 1mbs line :(

Out of interest, are you guys on IS Gold or Standard?

Any feedback on this? I'm interested in the 1 Mbps account at R349 and wondering if you can change between backbones.

I'm on the IS backbone (1024k Gold Uncapped)(on a 4Mbps line) and last night I ended up just switching the router off as I was more than pissed off.

I have put it down to end of the month blues.

Not sure if it was Telkom in Durban fiddling or DNS servers that have fallen over.

The internet over the last month has not happy that is all I can say !

Even the 4Mbps account I have with Telkom sucks and doesnt ever get over 3 Mbps. Its as if there isn't enough bandwidth on tap or they want an arm and a leg for it.

I'm on the standard uncapped on the IS backbone, but this definitely has to be either throttling or shaping, as when I download through Steam, it's flying at 40kb/s, but whenever I try through http, it goes procedurally slower until even dial-up can beat it.

It seems certain sites are being blocked here, because if I so much as try to download a 100kbs torrent file from the Pirate Bay, it simply never finishes downloading it. Certain filesharing sites also don't work. I got speeds of under 10kb/s from FileShare, and the file I downloaded through the night was an episode of The Walking Dead from MegaUpload, and when it started the download, I was getting full speed and about 5 minutes afterwards it started dropping until it reached 200b/s this morning.

Guys the standard uncapped has no other backbone other than IS, so please rather just say "standard uncapped" to avoid any confusion.

The gold accounts on the IS backbone perform completely different.

Thats how my results look during the day on 1mbs. Actually thats higher than I get most weekdays.
Even though I get that result in speedtest I still only manage to get an average of 9-10kbs on direct download during the day, except today where its down to 2kbs

This has reached a point where it does not feel like throtteling anymore. Calling the 1mbs uncapped account, a after hours account fits the description better and that is not what I signed up for.

I can accept if my account is half speed during the day, that is at least 50kbs but 8kbs?? That's like turning my account off.

When I started with the standard uncapped I was on the Siemens backbone and was later moved to IS after experiencing issues, so I don't know where you pulled that one from.

Also, it seems that from about 12pm until 6pm daily, gaming gets shaped or throttled so I can't do it all on the account.

I'll admit to not being entirely sure on how the standard product works, but specifying whether it's standard uncapped or gold uncapped would eliminate any confusion :)

A response from MrBeep regarding this issue would have been nice

Hi Friends,

We have different backbones for all our packages. The contention ratio is what separates Gold from Standard. We however do not move folks around on Standard unless it is critical. This perk is mainly reserved for Gold uncapped users.

Still doesn't explain why we are getting throttled to death during the day. If we can't get faster than 10kbs during the day on a 1mbs then it is a after hours account and not uncapped. I want a answer for this. IF we are getting throttled because we are in the 20%. Then I want it in black and white. I want a answer

Hello,

Your account does not get throttled, but is is shaped 24 / 7 as you are on a Standard Uncapped service. P2P and torrents will be slower when the network is busy. If your package does not suit, you may upgrade to a higher service level so that you are sharing with less people.

Well I feel getting shapped during the day till under 10kbs dl and browsing speed does not discribe a uncapped service but a afterhours account since I can only use my account without problems after 5 the evening :(

I can understand my uncapped package is the slowest of the lot, but honestly, being shaped until you download 200b/s isn't my idea of shaping. I can't really remember for sure, but I'm pretty sure I got better speeds on dial-up 6 years ago.
