Openweb Uncapped Feedback

I can understand my uncapped package is the slowest of the lot, but honestly, being shaped until you download 200b/s isn't my idea of shaping. I can't really remember for sure, but I'm pretty sure I got better speeds on dial-up 6 years ago.

The thing is, if it is shaping, its gotten a lot more extreme over the last few weeks.

384 standard uncapped during the day: 34-40kbs
1mb standard uncapped during the day: 6-10kbs

It doesn't make sense that the 1mbs package would get worse speeds than 384 during the day.

Hello,

The numbers you are quoting is extreme and not normal.

I just thought that's how it is during the day and if you want better then you have to get the unshaped package.

Not sure about the 384 being so fast during the day.But the 1024 is 56k speeds from day one with Openweb,so I know no better.

Normally around midnight it picks up speed.

I'm going to try the Gold PLUS and see if its any better.

I should also mention that in Amanzimtoti there is a **** load of fibre going into the ground so I wonder if they are fiddling with the major connections and hopefully upgrading the exchange. I can always hope that one day Durban will run as well as CT and JHB.

Telkom is the main reason I think my speeds are so up and down.

Guys on the 4mb gold uncapped accounts....How is your speeds lately...? I see lots of moaning in this thread of late so I'm trying to gauge who'm to switch over to seeing as the gold account is roughly R250 more expensive pm than everyone else :/

Im on the gold 4m IS backbone. I get around 200kb\s on downloads. It's been a very up and down first month for me with openweb. Will see what next month brings.

Definitely a lot of volatility around. A month or 2 ago I would say Openweb Gold was a no brainer. It's possibly still the best uncapped product on the market for the price but not as clear cut as it was a month ago. There not really that many viable alternatives. They all behave in a similar fashion...

I am still happy with my 384k Gold Uncapped, however the speeds have been a little erratic of late. Though this is not a complaint, so don't hold me to it Mr.BEEP. Just making a post for people to have a reference. Speeds have been bouncing up and down between 4kb/s and 28kb/s, but only on torrents. In-game ping and web browsing seem unaffected. Will see how this progresses in a few days.

Thanks,
Beo...

Keoma has given me a new IS account and I will be testing it for a while. Initial tests seems good and I was able to download on NNTP at an average of 330kb/s which is a nice improvement. Will continue testing tonight and see how it performs after hours.

Guys what backbone is the best for http downloads, youtube and just general browsing etc...

My line is flying today ! Go Openweb ! code word = |Gold PLUS|

EDIT : Its fallen over again

I can recommend Altech for those things. For http it is very reliable 24/7. It is also not too bad if you do a bit of torrents/p2p/nntp, but these are heavily shaped in the day (+-5KB/s) and only less heavily shaped at night (60-180KB/s), but it would be very frustrating if any of these protocols were your main use of bandwidth.

Thanks for the input guys. I have asked Keoma for a test account just to see how everything runs before I decide completely.

The only thing i can see as being a problem is if you are given a test account that does not work you, he won't chop and change backbone so you will get a bad idea of what is going on :D. Some love IS some hate it, some love altech some hate it. Depends on the person but there is always an account that satisfies ours needs.

What i would do is ask him if the account does not work for you will he wave the 30 day cancel notice, i am sure he won't mind as honestly you won't cancel.

Ya sure I understand that 100%. Seeing as the end of the month is beckoning I'll see what Mr Beep has to say :)

Hi,

Sorry for not responding earlier, but I haven't really had time up until now. I'll send an email immediately.

I get a feeling my issues aren't account related, though. I just switched to an Mweb account, and I get more or less the same issues. I didn't test http downloads, but my Steam downloads are also sporadic, jumping between 5kb/s and 40kb/s constantly, never staying stable for long. Playing games also results in extremely high pings when no background applications are running, and I used a tcp monitor to check for other programs using bandwidth, but I didn't see anything out of the ordinary for an idle computer. I'm not sure if it's a busy exchange or something, but the problems don't seem to be isolated to my OpenWeb account.

I have had issues the last couple of nights.
My ping to local gaming servers shoots up to 200ms. On a backup capped account its 20-30ms.
Also on the openweb account it says at the bottom right icon in Windows 7 that its searching for a network and that i dont have internet access...even though i am able to browse. Once again my backup account works fine.
I am on the VB backbone.
