Slow krappy speeds today feels like the line is halved. Mailed MrBeep awaiting response.

Anyone know if there is works or outages anywhere

Hope its not the future results with the fifa around the corner and all the visitors.

On which network are you running? I know there is a problem with one of them... it's an ongoing problem with the upstream provider.
 
Hi there peeps :)

Quick quesion or two: at temporary residence we are using a 4Mbps MWEB account which at this point is not performing as promised. That said, I know that our local exchange is saturated and is being upgraded to increased exchange and DSLAM bandwidth by more than 10 times. I did however see that Openweb offer several packages. While the Platinum and unshaped packages are out of reach, the 4Mbps Uncapped Gold is definitely an option as soon as someone can tell me if it is really worth the extra R200 pm? They mention lower contention ratios on the website but does that realize to full line speed? I am specifically interested in how the Standard and Gold packages compare ito P2P and News server downloading after hours (I know that business hours not much can be expected but want to atleast get as close as possible to full line speed from 8pm onwards).

Me smells a fishy...
Telkom technicians are striking as of yesterday and it just happens to coincide with major outages on out data network...
 
Gold package is aces with browsing and streaming video etc. Far better to anything that IS offer currently in the same line. If you a gamer though you may have some minor ping issues, but apart from that Line speed is very good on gold. Rapidshare and HotFile, P2P and Torrents are also heavily shaped though, if that is what you want the uncapped for. Throttling on these types of services generally pick up later in the evening.

Everything was flying yesterday, sadly today... it goes as low as 8KB/s, can't get anything higher than 22KB/s, whereas yesterday, I got between 42-46KB/s.

Doing a tracert test to games.saix.net, yields an interesting result:

[-]I don't know who else might be having a problem.....
But my OW Gold account (on IS) is currently dead in the water. It cut out at 17:26, and it won't dial back in. I left it for 15min to retry every 20 seconds but nothing.
Put it on PPPOE mode, tried to dial in, still throws the 691 error (Incorrect user/pass).

Any thoughts?



edit: (10pm Sunday) Account still won't connect :(

Edit: It works now. Apparently a radius failure at Telkom.

The Standard IS uncapped account should be called an afterhours account as during the week I can hardly access any web-sites... My account today

MrBeep is there another problem today?
My imagine IS uncapped account is perfectly fine, so I don't think its IS.

The standard IS account that you see here is afaik exactly the same as Imagine's one.
I went onto my imagine account from last night until this morning while my OW Gold wouldn't work...... damn slow. 15Kbps the whole time.
Back on OW Gold now and awesome speeds (definitely worth the extra R120).

My imagine account is fine this morning, but OW is unuseable... So yes they use the same Provider(IS) but they're not the same!!
Am definitely considering moving back to capped webafrica account if this continues for the rest of the month!

Remember that the basic uncapped IS accounts are just resold.
You get two types though:
pure uncapped (Imagine)
per gig uncapped (Afrihost and most other providers).
Not sure which OW uses.
Take a look at upgrading to OW Gold. I get twice the throughput on OW Gold compared to Imagine's basic uncapped.

I do realise that the accounts are just resold, and that openweb only have a small profit margin per account, but they're paying IS for the accounts on our behalf and should therefore make sure that IS fixes the problem in an acceptable time frame. The accounts have been this slow during the week for the whole month bar maybe two days.....

On the weekends and after 6pm it generally works fine... So the basic IS uncapped accounts are actually day-time throttled to 256Kb/s uncapped 4Mb/s accounts... To me its just unacceptable, and the gold account may be much better but that's not the point I was trying to make.
