Just to verify, are you downloading using SSL during the day from Usenet? If so, disable it and check your speeds again. I also found that during business hours downloading using SSL gets shaped to sub 384k speeds, but as soon as I disabled it, it ran full tilt 420KB/s+.
Furthermore it also depends on which backbone you are on at the moment. The VB network in book is absolutely superb and I haven't had any problems with it whatsoever. The only negative thing about the VB network is that torrents don't download like they should, but I'm not a torrent user, nzb and http only and VB performs top notch for both of them. Other than that its quite likely that if Telkom were experiencing exchange issues last night, they could still be working on it today and your exchange might be affected.
Thanks for the feedback. I tried the no SSL connection now, but it only made about 5KB/s difference. What really gets my goat is that where it was just usenet flaking out, currently it's everything.
My username ends in @openweb, and as I understand it, that means I'm on the IS network, right? So maybe I can thank IS for this whole collective cluster-whatsit. When you say torrents don't download like they should, what do you mean? Nothing at all, or just really slow speeds? I'm not big on torrents, since being introduced to usenet, but I still use them from time to time as a fall back.
