Openweb Uncapped Feedback

Seems mine might be to blame as well... Fault logged will probably get some form of response from them in October :3

killadoob, this isn't necessarily so much of an issue resulting from my not being on the 'gold' package. We've been on the 4mbps uncapped lite package almost since it launched, and in general it's actually been extremely good (180kb/s+ weekday daytime speeds for torrenting or other 'mass file transfer' protocols without problems and 430kb/s for all protocols after hours/on weekends). The issues began some months ago where, occasionally, even local sites would have a lot of trouble loading, packets would drop all over the place for both up and downstream, I'd be unable to maintain the ~11kb/s average required for the internet radio stations I'd normally listen to, the connection would flatline for either up or downstream (while the other has no trouble continuing to work) or speeds would simply come down to a crawl for hours, even days on end.

What particularly bothers me is that daytime latencies to local gaming servers are currently getting a good 130ms added onto them on weekdays. This issue began about two? months ago, maybe more, and the longest single period it carried on for was for three weeks. It went away for a week or so some weeks ago and is back again now.

This wasn't the case for the first year or so, but these issues are getting bad enough that I want to change ISPs. If mweb are able to provide better consistency of service at the same price point (R540), then I see no reason not to shift to them versus upgrading to gold with Openweb simply to get back a service level that I had for a year previously.

That's like paying Telkom to get 64kbps ISDN when their dialup speeds gradually degraded from the 7kb/s maintained data rate all the way down to 2.8kb/s, just so you could get back to the speeds you were used to by paying them significantly more.

*edit* And this quite clearly has nothing to do with the 'dynamic' throttling of users that fall into x usage category, as the same issue has cropped up and gone away at any given time during a month, sometimes even appearing and disappearing again on the same day, even if usage for that day remained so low as to virtually indicate the account was unused for a 48 hour period.

Dude that is why i said either go with mweb or openweb gold. If a service is not working you must change it.

Have you tested another account to be sure it is openweb and not the exchange?

Just a bad weekend overall for internet it seems. Getting about 100kb/s on news servers...sure this time at night it should be full speed. Is it Telkom or Openweb? I don't know anymore.

killadoob, not yet. I'll have to wait till Monday to get ahold of Mweb to arrange for a test account with them, and our Afrihost prepaid hasn't had any bandwidth on it for months now on account of, well, not needing it... I'll give Afrihost a try tomorrow if things don't improve and see how it fares. I'll post back here once I've gotten the test account out of Mweb as well for the sake of comparison.

It would be just be easier to get a 1gb account or something for 20 bucks and test it. Why go through the mission of an mweb test account when you are not sure if it your exchange or openweb? Afrihost sell gb's for R9.50. If that runs full speed you know it's openweb if it struggles you know it's telkom

Hello,

If you are having a problem, please email me: [email protected]

Please include yourt MyADSL nickname and ADSL username. I will investigate for you :)

At this point I doubt I'm going to continue to be an Openweb Gold subscriber. I've had the account since the begining of the month and it is yet to function absolutely correctly, consistently. Last weekend it seemed to have worked with HTTP downloads, while NNTP and Torrents simply would not move faster than 10KB/s. This weekend, it seems the network clamped down on Filesonic, since I now get 5KB/s per connection, and they disconnect the connections continuously, which results in socket timeouts and such. This ruins download speeds and means I need to basically refresh all of them every hour or so if I want to get more than 100KB/s. Not really 4Mbit performance, now is it?
I'll probably be switching to MWEB, shockingly, as my friends who use that have better performance while spending less money.

Edit - My feeling is that the network is simply being saturated.

Gold IS is very funny TBH (on a per user basis i mean), sorry to hear about your troubles Messugga.

I started 2 NNTP downloads on Friday night and since then it has been running at 420KB/s (1.50GB/h), granted it is weekend but no problem whatsoever. I also haven't surfed many sites but the ones i have (Lifehacker, Gizmodo same network) all worked fine.

Having said this, i will be hoping to test VB for NNTP this week :D and hopefully reach a 500GB landmark :p , so far 210GB doesn't quite satisfy ;)

Hope you get sorted bud. :)

As for the Seacom outage (as mentioned above) no issues to be reported :) so whatever it is Keoma has as redundancy, works like a beaut.

All I can say is that my account on IS backbone is total crap today. Even well seeded torrents are not moving at all. Surfing the web is all-right (not brilliant), and gaming is good.

Probably my worst day yet.

Right, I've been switched to a different network. Seems to be IS. Unlike the previous time I was on IS, things seem to actually be moving again. Currently running at a nice and steady 300+KB/s with HTTP. Video streaming and such seems to be working nicely as well. Now I'm just curious as to how it will perform during the week.

What backbone did you move to? I've been on Altech since July, and apart from the odd bit of sluggishness which resolves quite quickly, I'm very happy. Much happier than when I was a rebel boy in the Mweb schoolyard.

So far my move to mweb has been great ^^ 40gb usage this month with no shaping

meh all i want to do is watch a 480p live stream on justin.tv, haven't been able to do this for over a week now :'(

IS. And as with my previous experience on this network, at 7:00AM, to the second, shaping kicks in and my downloading speeds drop from 450KB/s to 60KB/s. This means of course that this account is useless until 11:00PM, during the week, unless that has changed in the last couple of weeks. I'll give it a chance and wait and see what happens tonight, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

Nope! Seems things got sorted out somewhat and they decided to actually only limit download sites rather than sites people actually use the internet for. Youtube's running pretty smoothly and Steam even works as well. Well done.

Please go to the Mweb thread. We are quite happy with OW thank you very much.

I am hitting full speed this morning on my seedbox ;p

Yeah well I used even less on openweb and I got shaped to 8kbs during the day on my 1mbs and dont say, ahh but you have to have gold . . .

I'm not going to pay more for something that gives me worse performance than mweb at R299. In fact I've been getting better latencies on mweb than on openweb

edit: and no Im not gonna leave till I get an explanation on why I got 8kbs during the day
