It emerged that the studies mentioned in the EMP were ‘desktop studies’. In other words, existing literature had been used for information.

No one from Falcon or SRK or Chevron had actually visited the Karoo, taken samples of soil, or surveyed plants, ancient rock etchings or rare animals.

Brilliant example. Shows the lies and pseudo-science of the Gasland anti-fracking mob just perfectly.

Read up about it: that "light the water" trick in Gasland was standard in the same house and same area since the 1920s. It's a natural phenomenon in the water in that area. Rather long before fracking was even thought of, btw.

Scientific Study Links Flammable Drinking Water to Fracking

For the first time, a scientific study has linked natural gas drilling and hydraulic fracturing with a pattern of drinking water contamination so severe that some faucets can be lit on fire.

The peer-reviewed study, published today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, stands to shape the contentious debate over whether drilling is safe and begins to fill an information gap that has made it difficult for lawmakers and the public to understand the risks.


The research was conducted by four scientists at Duke University. They found that levels of flammable methane gas in drinking water wells increased to dangerous levels when those water supplies were close to natural gas wells. They also found that the type of gas detected at high levels in the water was the same type of gas that energy companies were extracting from thousands of feet underground, strongly implying that the gas may be seeping underground through natural or manmade faults and fractures, or coming from cracks in the well structure itself.

“Our results show evidence for methane contamination of shallow drinking water systems in at least three areas of the region and suggest important environmental risks accompanying shale gas exploration worldwide,” the article states.

The group tested 68 drinking water wells in the Marcellus and Utica shale drilling areas in northeastern Pennsylvania and southern New York State. Sixty of those wells were tested for dissolved gas. While most of the wells had some methane, the water samples taken closest to the gas wells had on average 17 times the levels detected in wells further from active drilling. The group defined an active drilling area as within one kilometer, or about six tenths of a mile, from a gas well.

Secondly, why go with fracking when there is another source of power that is cheaper and far less polluting, namely nuclear? It takes about 5 - 10 years to construct a nuclear power plant, which is a much more worthwhile investment. Employment figures won't be as high, but in an energy crisis, that should be the last concern on anyone's mind. Let's not forget that the majority of people who would be employed by fracking are the same majority that (a) voted this useless government into power in the first place (b) believe they should get electricity for free.

Problem here is that any nuclear plant will be done by Eskom, and with Medupi and Kusile already running 5/6 years late, how long before we actually have a nuclear plant up and running? And at what cost?

Fracking will be done by private companies.

another ninkapoop who starts new threads every which way without paying heed to previous ones. Shell SA is owned by the ANC. Do you think they're going to let them do this properly? They won't be done until every contractor is in their pockets, and every tender is awarded to their bloodsucking offspring.

So explain, pray tell, how this is going to be done by private companies, and how that is better. The hold-ups at Medupi/Kusile was because of foreign contractors like Alstom and Hitachi among others. And who owns Hitachi South Africa? I'll give you a hint: they probably built his firepool.
