We opened the door of the C30 and its almost double the thickness of the Scrirroco....and yes, the 5 year maintainance plan is a beeeeeg selling point for us...
I like the C30 to drive, but it's still ugly. And that doesn't change 
I still think the G6 GTI is the best all round package and a whole lot prettier than the C30.. And, maybe it's more "common" because more people buy these cars, however I think there's a reason for that.
I also think Volvo has improved and are not AS boring as they used to be, so enjoy

Because we have too many people without taste on the roads??
The GTI is really not the "alpha and omega" - in MY opinion ugly - I could at least stand the looks of the Golf 5...
Performance wise - the Volvo and Golf are on par (same class).
Fuel economy will be about the same as well (depending on your driving style).
Build Quality - Volvo's build quality is far superior.
Design and Style comes down to personal taste.
I'd much rather go for the T5!
As far as I understand, they've got different (sports) suspension and other uprated goodies the standard 2.0 does not have...

The C30 is just ugly, the people punting it are actually punting the R-design...
But seriously, I think its a crap car
The interiors are sub standard. Resale is poor. And it is a boring looking car even though they rare...
Think I've mentioned before we've had ample VWs, Volvos, BMWs, Porsches and others brands of cars. On average we tend to swap out at 12-18 months. So from experience, some of us are able to recommend on certain brands.
Guess the brand that we now stay far away from and the brands we buy in future ... ?
And if you'd willingly choose a Polo GTI over a Volvo C30 T5 because - in your eyes - you have a better interior and it's quicker, there is something wrong with you.

update, the T5 for R270k is gone...
..only a T5 R-Design left....
....R300k..pre-facelift...that's R30k completely out of budget (even if R270k was R20k overbudget)....the R20k trade assitance is not applicable on the prefacelift models...

Confusing how you have gone so over budget, don't mind buying a car that has poor resale value but won't consider something like a G6? Just doesn't make financial sense..
Maybe, more people have similar taste, and that makes the minority feel the majority don't have taste? I'm confused, since when does something that appeal to more people mean they have no taste?
Agreed, the GTI 5 was prettier than a 6, but I thought we talking new or "almost new" cars
Yes, performance is on par but there's a 500cc difference.. this I imagine translates to better fuel consumption from the VW's 2.0 engine.
Build quality I find very similar between the 2 actually. Where does the Volvo excel where a new G6 doesn't?
Yes, I agree, I would also go for the T5 over the 2.0 if I were only given the option of a Volvo C30
The don have you driven both cars? T% defines the word Smooth in everyway. If you want the smoothest drive then drive a T5. And boy its quick, on a personal experience, I've chowed GTi's, 2.0TFsi's ( EOS) . So perfomance wise GTi is no match to the T5, mind you I am talking about the old 162 KW T5 here. Please dont tell me about chips and all that crap that doesnt come standard.

That 500cc extra does add fuel consumption - but also an extra cylinder, 15% extra torque and 10% power. The T5 *is* smoother than the Golf for sure and an easier drive.
From the above, I'd say the engine is better - albeit more thirsty.
Well, I can tell you the R Design is a bigger head turner than any GTI and every person I've asked, agrees it's a fantastic looking car. It's not even 10% more expensive either.
Warranty and mainteance can't even compare on a GTI - they offer only offer a 3 year service plan. I had better on my RunX
Volvo gives a 5 year maintenance plan - so you effectivly pay fuel and tyres for 5 years.Luxury? Again - I doubt the GTI can compare with the standard items Volvo throughs in.
Reliabily? We've had Polos, GTIs, Touregs etc and S40s, C70s and none of the Volvos have let us down. GTI4 (132kw) bought brand new had gearbox issues at 30,000km and my uncles had a clutch replaced (VW refused to pay). The Polo has power steering issues and the Toureg has just about every sensor fail in 3 years :/
The Touareg is probably the last VW ni the garage now - soon to be replaced by either a Volvo

My Dad is on his second Volvo S40 T4...he's had both from new. I don't know why Volvo went from a 2.0 turbo to a 2.5 liter turbo. I would guess reliablity. On the second S40, at 98 300km on the clock, Volvo replaced the complete engine on the car under the motorplan because the car suddenly started drinking oil at 97500km and they could not pin-point the problem quickly enough. The service manager showed my dad the bill which was R137 000 for the parts and total work done on the car. Obviously my dad was ecstatic about this but I believed that they most likely had similar issues with other T4 motors and simply replaced them. Another view could be that they had too many T4 engines 'on the shelf' and need to dispose of them.....don't really know, and to my dad, he did not really care...
The difference between the 2.0 T4 motor in the S40 and the T5 in the C30 I noticed was that the T4 felt more explosive and goes through the gears quickly. It would simply rocket away. The C30 T5 surges away....its such an awesome drive and its wat got me hooked on the C30....
The 5 year maintenance plan is really awesome on the Volvo...tyres and fuel is all you pay, for a whole five years....and your monthly installment as well...

Buying a car should never make financial sense unless you run a business....buy the car you want.....or buy a Corolla and brag to your friends at the braai about its awesome resale value and then drive home and drool at the C300 AMG that you easily could afford, but refuse to buy....different strokes for different folks. We work hard and its simply awesome to be able to choose a car that you like and want and that you can afford.....not many people have that priviledge....or have kids...
EDIT: Ok, I admit, its senseless to spend more than R5k per month for a car......even R4500 is too much.....R4000 is also rediculous, but then again you are in Polo/Corolla territory....

Considered focus ST? Same engine (3 or 4 bhp less.), lighter, their build quality is on par today, cheaper, not a GTI.
- T5 is quicker than a GTI.
- 5 year maintainance plan on a Volvo, VW only service plan.
- Volvo Better built, better JD power survey reliability scores than VW.
- You can't compare a VW to Volvo, Volvo is a more premium brand.
- VW or Volvo, all cars loose value, if you're that worried don't buy something that expensive.
- The drive in a Volvo is superior to cars I've driven which includes VW, Honda, Renault, Citroen.
- 5 year maintainance plan on a Volvo, VW only service plan.

Also, all the Toyotas we had failed us.....so I'll never own a Toyota....now Datsun/Nissans never failed us...

That's the thing, I agree that they are First On Rubbish Dump, but the ST's use Volvo engines. Their bodywork is also pretty good from what I hear. Also another consideration, Civic Type R, but I think you'll want to drive that more (they're damn fun to drive apparently).
