Sentech gave crap again today, so I decided to stuff them, and upgrade the ISDN at the office to ADSL.

Phoned 10217, and within 2 minutes I was talking to a nice Telkom lady. Said I want to convert my ISDN to Analogue, and then put ADSL on there (just to minimize confusion) - she asked if I mean I want to upgrade ISDN to ADSL, and I said yes. Couldn't believe it. O well. At last someone who doesn't tell the client that they can't run ADSL on ISDN...

She gave me a installation date of 18 August.

So let's see what happens.

Touch tomorrow, it never comes.

pun intended.

EDIT: Wow, that's pretty good even if I do say so myself.

Not in much of a hurry. Been putting it off for about 6 months now.

Already did the order, should I go to the shop every 2 weeks or so to get progress reports in stead of phoning them?

Will probably be quicker to cancel the order and redo it at the Telkom shop... if you go see them on Monday, I doubt if the order will even be on their system if ordered over the phone

AFAIK telkom will automatically convert your ISDN line to analogue when installing ADSL.

Yeah they do, although they are working on ADSL over ISDN.
They have been telling me that they working on ADSL over ISDN for the last 2 years - it seems a very slow process:mad:

And why should they bother as only the oddball Germans implements Annex B of DSL (DSL over ISDN).

Would be nice to have the advantages of both ISDN and ADSL without needing two lines:)

Telkom are idiots. One of my clients called them and said they were having problems with their ADSL line. Telkom came and installed an ISDN line !

Adsl can be provided on ordinary copper lines in conjunction with an analogue line (ITU-T G.992.1 Annex A) or in conjunction with an ISDN line (ITU-T G.992.1 Annex B). In terms of Telkoms original ADSL network description both these options were specified - refer
http://www.telkom.co.za/pls/portal/docs/page/contents/athome/products/dsl/downloads/SN-TF0001.pdf

However AFAIK telkom has given up on providing ADSL over ISDN as evidenced by this reply I received from them in December 2004

It was initially envisaged to launch ADSL over ISDN, unfortunately tests run so far indicate that there are disturbances on the network caused by running ADSL over ISDN and therefore we have requested more substantial testing. The document referred to was drawn up at the time when we thought we would be able to launch ADSL over ISDN. I will have it rectified in due course.

mikef, you mean to say they Telkom could have had ADSL over an ISDN line ?

It's telkom we're talking about; it took them 10 years to introduce ADSL :P

It works in many other countries (not just Germany):)

yeah with the ADSL standard we use in SA it is in fact possible, but I believe there are some complications, as stipulated below.

Get a update/progress report every now and then. If you asked for self install it will be faster. Usually if a port is available at exch thats where the hang up in ordering occurs(getting a tech to come visit + test).
