Oscar Pistorius: The Sentence

The irony is that when Oscar Pistorius woke up this morning, there really was a burglar in his bathroom.

If he takes his own life out of remorse even then you wouldn't fogive him. So I don't see any reason to discuss this with you.

Not exactly. Excerpt from 'We don't want revenge - Reeva's mom' below:

June said the family accepted the decision, despite indicating that some members were not "entirely happy".

"We're very settled with the sentence," she added.

"We may not feel that justice has been done, but we have just got to accept what the judge decided.

"Not everyone is entirely happy... the facts that she [the judge] had before her maybe weren't enough. But we have to live."

Her husband Barry also said the family had to go along with what Judge Thokozile Masipa had decided.

"Only Oscar knows whether that sentence is acceptable to him," he said.

"I've got my feelings to the whole thing. But we do accept what the judge handed down."

Speaking outside the courtroom in Pretoria, June Steenkamp said even though Pistorius may be out of prison in as little time as ten months time, "it doesn't matter. He's going to pay something," she said, confirming her satisfaction with the sentence.

The Steenkamp family lawyer said outside court: “The family wanted justice, justice has been done,” adding June was “satisfied” by the sentence.

Oscar Pistorius Season 2: Big Brother Kgosi Mampuru

A 5 year sentence is actually a pretty good middle ground. If he genuinely behaves well and gets out on house arrest after a year on merit then good for him.

The judge has been a bit inconsistent in conveying her decisions but at the end the ultimate sentence I think is fair. With another judge and different legal teams it could have gone either way. At least he has time to sit and think about his actions and has a chance to get out pretty soon and not lose everything. Keeping out of the media and not appealing or asking for preferential treatment would go a long way in saving face in the public domain.

But only (potentially) serving 8-10 months of a 5 year sentence...? Fsck me I don't know how a person can call that justice.
