Ban it and burn it!!

:D Oh the irony.

@ JK8

And then? What is next? Start banning political parties? Sounds like you miss apartheid too much.

There was nothing wrong with the old flag, Why was it necessary to change it It was the flag of South Africa whether you agree with the apartheid connotations or not. If the ANC is removed from government and the Party for Free Biltong forms the next government does that mean another new flag.
This current flag is just another ho hum african flag like so many others, uninspiring and sorely lacking in design merit or patriotic appeal for black or white. Proud of the new flag? No, South Africa has just gone downhill since it first fluttered in the breeze.

So sanctions and State of Emergency and a worthless international currency had nothing to do with it ... the words saving your own skin comes to mind rather than benevolence.

Hey, comrade, tell us about your bravery's.

Or did you leave it to your werker father and all of a sudden you claim the victory.

Respect your father, he helped you to get where you are.

Your father and I differed and I fought him. We respect each other.

For you, Big poop no chief, Big chief, no poop.

Democracy still needs to bitch slap a few South Africans and remind them that this is a free country, and its citizens are "free" to do and say whatever they please, as long as they are not breaking the law.

There are lots of majorities in this country, we have a "majority of people", "majority of <insert race here>", "majority of <insert sexual orientation>", etc.

Certain majorities hate <insert something here>, while other majorities love <insert something here>.

Certain majorities are also minorities in SA as a whole, and economically this country cannot afford to ban and burn them, not yet.

Ok, lets refresh our history:

Currency:
Then 1 USD = +-R3.50, Now, 1 USD = R7
Then 1 GBP = +-R5.50, Now, 1 GBP = R14

Sanctions were annoying, but our economy was doing just fine. Price of basic goods was much better then and we had no shortages of anything. The only real effect was the sporting bans.

"saving your own skin" - Economically, there was no problem. Mass uprising - SA had the 3rd most powerful land army in the world in terms of training and equipment; the uprising would have caused thousands of fatalities before the army deployed but once deployed, it would have crushed the uprising. The number of slaughtered blacks would have been depressing, but we would mourn them and then move on. Don't forget what happened to the arab nations when five of them attacked little old Israel, and we were a much better army then they were at the time they were attacked in that war.

I voted in that referendum. I voted YES. I voted for my principles and conscience, not to "save my skin". I regret my vote, but only because of the outcome, not because of the principles. Apartheid was wrong, but it should have been ended gently, with more planning on integration and replacing a hunter-gatherer with a trade mentality. We made a mistake, we should have known better but we did not learn from history, and now you will have to pay the consequences; even if you don't see the truck coming, it is on it's way, I warn you, look up.

I have no alliance to the old flag and even less to the new one. I cannot respect a flag and what it stands for until the government get their act together and clean up their house, they need to get their priorities right, rule out corruption within their ranks and become accountable for their mistakes and blatant disregard of the laws that they impose.

Ironies

This thread is so full of irony, it is not funny.

The same people who suggest burning the flag, as it is a symbol of apartheid, are those who are quickest to remember the effects of apartheid. So the desire ban the flag is hardly as a result of wanting to move on from the past.

At the same time, I don't hear a desire to ban "Bring me my machine gun" from those same people.

We talk the attrocities committed by the apartheid government yet we honour murderers of civilians by naming streets after them.

On the subject of homelands, Blacks complained under apartheid that they had homelands. Nowdays, all that Afrikaners want is homelands, and the government won't give it to them. Funny isn't it.

But here is why: Afrikaners, like the Jews, know that they will make their homeland work, that their culture is capabable of succeeding on its own, with minimal help from outside.

On the other hand, Blacks didn't welcome self-rule in homelands, because they knew that they couldn't make it succeed.

A flag is merely a symbol of a country and its people, not the government of the day.

If you feel so much disdain towards the country and have no desire to be a part of its evolution then why not explore other options?

In 1990, were South-Africa a better place to live, than the following extremes Ethiopia, Rwanda?

In 1990, were South-Africa a better place to live, than Zambia, which has had independence since 1964?

Why do you compare with some bongo-bongo countries up north? In 1990 South Africa would have been a better place to live if:

- Blacks could own property
- Blacks were not excluded from jobs
- Blacks had a share in the wealth generated by the mineral resources owned by all
- Blacks had a share in the businesses that were built up on their labour
- Blacks could have saved the (stolen) wealth and invested it new businesses
- Blacks weren't being stuffed around by the police, the army, and who knows who else
- Blacks had freedom of movement
- The list is endless.....

You seem to forget that this land belongs to ALL of its people. Not just the Afrikaners.

Obviously, being a black South-African now and then, meant you had a better life, than the other African leaders provided for their own people. I do not deny that Aparthied was terrible, but give credit where it is due, you had food and health, compared to the rest of Africa.

Compared with Europe it was a bit k@k. Try doing that sort of comparison. Or are blacks supposed to go to church each Sunday and thank g0d for Hendrik Verwoerd, because he gave them such a great life?

Who said I am a black South African anyway? Silly assumption.

100% in agreement with this. All that they're doing is irritating thell hell out of me with these senseless comments. I wish they would grow up and get it in their heads that apartheid is gone and it's not coming back, ever. So either you get over it, or ship out! Pronto.

Enough with the complaining. Sheesh!

Don't take edc too seriously. He's just a resident racist, obssessed with highliting everything that's bad about this country. edc and moederlos are extremely unhappy in this place and they need to emigrate immediately.

Coming to SA didnt just fall into my lap, it was an opportunity that I made happen. So you've come to the wrong guy if you're looking for a handout.

More people have probably lost thier lives under the current regime, the new flag sickens me too already...

So true.......

It swings both ways. Others need to get past apartheid as well and it is just as irritating.

You sure it wasn't a brick hitting you on the head :p :D

Agreed - there are many people from both sides of the fence determined to focus on the past.
