Our old flag

Earlier a question was asked about what makes an Afrikaner. i think that this describes part of our heritage. its a poem by Jan F.E. Celliers. if you cant read it get some one to translate it for you.

Dis al

Dis die blond,
dis die blou:
dis die veld,
dis die lug;
en ’n voël draai bowe in eensame vlug –
dis al

Dis ’n balling gekom
oor die oseaan,
dis ’n graf in die gras,
dis ’n vallende traan –
dis al

as a people we have fought for what we have.
yes apartheid was wrong.
there is no confusion there.
What is being done now is no better than apartheid. its just reversed. so in another 10 years the balance will shift again. i just hope that the ppl in power look at history and learn from it.

It is said that freedom fighters should fight for freedom and then retire. they have too much hatred in their hearts.

and know this:
burning everything a man stands for will not dissuade him of his beliefs. it will turn them inward where they are not seen and vented, becoming a cause worth fighting for.

A poem? A Wiki link... what does it mean to you? Not much coz none of you can answer it...

I watch Top Billing regularly and Iv noticed the people decorate their houses with african styles and Ndebele styles... Id like to think its accepting the new SA but it could also be cause they dont have a culture of their own!!
Could I be right?

firstly, the old flag rocks - it's got the Union Jack in it :D

seriously though, I think it's a little unfair to claim that more people have died under one flag vs the other in SA. The fact is that patriotism is largely non existent in SA. In the US, the flag is a true symbol of everything that America stands for - they even pledge allegiance to it (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pledge_of_Allegiance), and there are very few countrymen and women more patriotic than Americans.

You cannot bundle the statistics of crime and associate these statistics with a flag, it is nonsensical at best. I seriously doubt any criminals salute the flag before going on a crime spree. Crime itself is entirely unpatriotic, and I am pretty sure criminals don't give a hoot what flag is fluttering in front of the bank they're about to rob.

That is a ludicrous suggestion.

South Africa is struggling to find its identity, and the current flag does seem to be a dividing symbol. Similarly the constant attempts at changing history and renaming everything is not giving South Africa an opportunity to create an identity, one that all South Africans can claim as their own.

I constantly read things like "You seem to forget that this land belongs to ALL of its people. Not just the Afrikaners", yet there is an obvious attempt (and it's pretty obvious to an "outsider" like me) to remove 'Afrikanerism' entirely from society. You cannot move on if you're stuck in the past, and I think all of you are stuck in the past. One group wants the privilege they had, while the others wants to proportion blame and impose guilt.

was there a question? or are you just rambling on?

All the old flags should be burnt

Why dont you just demolish the Voortrekker monument too, that would put a smile on your face too? I bet it would.

There is no such thing as tolerance in Africa, thats why most of Africa is forever degenerating, despite making a few steps here and there, it always self-destructs after some progress has been made.

The new flag was to represent unity and togetherness in the new South Africa. After Madiba left NO ONE knows what the flag represents anymore. Only good for toilet-paper. A flag used to be respected, now you see it on anybody's car, buttocks etc.etc. No pride in the flag. The ANC might as well present their flag to be used for South Africa as the Afrikaners and whites is also represented in the current flag, AND THEY DO NOT WANT THAT>

A flag is merely a symbol of a country and its people, not the government of the day.

If you feel so much disdain towards the country and have no desire to be a part of its evolution then why not explore other options?

Agreed, the flag is not a symbol of the Government, perhaps I should have worded my post differently. What I am saying is that the Government are not leading by good example and until they do the rest of the Country will merely follow their suit and crime, corruption and mismanagement will prevail.

I never said I had no desire to be part of the Country's evolution and exploring other options is not a viable solution! I am here, will stay here and am entitled to voice my opinion whether it be negative or positive. I am not against transformation, in fact I support it pro actively!

100% in agreement with this. All that they're doing is irritating thell hell out of me with these senseless comments. I wish they would grow up and get it in their heads that apartheid is gone and it's not coming back, ever. So either you get over it, or ship out! Pronto.

Enough with the complaining. Sheesh!

While these comments may be irritating to you, yours are just plain offensive to me.
FYI not everyone who makes a negative comment about our Country is hankering after the Apartheid era and plenty of people did not support it at the time. I am so sick and tired of coming up against this type of attitude of 'get over it or ship out' As you say 'Enough with the complaining, Sheesh!'
This is my Country and I have invested my life here, I'm not about to move on just because people like you cannot accept critiscism.

And there I left my decoder at home! Looks like about seks!

blond - blonde
veld - out in the veld
lug - under a clear sky?
voel - penis, if the SADF boys were right
balling - balling, obviously
gekom - cum on then!
traan - why did she have to cry afterwards???

Dunno about the other bits. Am I on the right track?

There are none as blind as those who choose not to see. You choose not to see - and I cannot expect you to as what makes me an Afrikaner is different from what makes you Indian. My worldview is different from yours. But if you were able to dig deep with real interest in someone elses culture you would find the wealth of it. But if you choose to look at it from a distance you'll get stuck with those elements most visible to you - and actually only those things you choose to see. It's like me seeing a samoosa walking down the street in Durbs - curry pumping through its veins :D . If that is what I choose to see with no real desire to know more then thats what it will be for me.

Glad to hear it. The more that feel that way the better. :)

My use of the word 'you' was intended to be more of an in general you, I certainly wasn't targeting you.

Yeah your racist African track!

Tsimo if apartheid was reversed, you wouldn't even posting on this website. This is exactly the senselessness i was referring to. Some people make seriously rediculous and baseless comments, inspired by their tribalistic mentalities. You've never experienced apartheid, and thankfully you never will. I guess ignorance really is bliss.

Today whites are mutually excluded from many things due to the past heritage based on skin color. Not much unlike the old South Africa. Reverse racism is what our current flag became to represent! The arrow probably indicates a wide ethnic society becoming one. Interbreeding?

What is wrong with interbreeding ...?

Seeing that the current flag is all inclusive why owuld one want to wave the old flag?
...
The South African flag is basically made up of former South African flags and the past meanings of the colors were Red for bloodshed, blue of open blue skies, green for the land, black for the black people, white for the European people and yellow for the natural resources such as gold..

You must be joking! Then I presume the ANC does not know what that "all inclusive" means.

Interbreeding? Ask a Zulu or Xhosa or German and find out.

We are talking about the flag being all inclusive

Well, I'm a Zulu married to a half Xhosa half Sotho woman. I have a very close friend who's father is German and his mother is Dutch. Now tell me what is wrong with interbreeding?
