Hi all

A friend has a problem which he's asked me to help with.

For some (NOT all) emails, he can't open them and gets the following message, "is unable to open this mail, has encountered an unexpected problem. Check for low memory or insufficient disk space"

Its a brand new pc, while has been running for a few weeks...

Please help anyone?

Has Windows XP been updated completely? Is there any anti-virus or anti-spyware software installed?

Does the error go away if you attempt to open the same email after the error has been displayed once? Or is it a recurring error?

:)

Same thing (error message) happened to me after upgrading a friend of mine's PC from '98 to XP Home. I've backed up his '98 OE mail and restored the mail to OE on XP Home, and from then he was unable to open some mail. The only fix for this was a complete format and the reinstalment of XP without OE backup and no error message anymore.
I cannot tell if this is the same problem that you're having, but it fixed our error messages.

tx for the responses guys---

@feo: eish!

@f4ntom: i non-comprendo

@WKJ?:beanie: yes fully updated.

@R4tt3xx: doesn't mailbox size refer to the size on the server? this wouldn't matter as OE downloads mail and deletes it off the server..making it empty

Don't worry about f4ntom, he needs to see a doctor :p

I assume the guys are talking about the size of Outlook Express' mailbox on the PC itself, since Outlook Express seems to be limited to a mailbox size of 2GB :)

hmm, interesting, ok well I'll go have a look again

eish...

Okay, I'm guessing you're either running Vista or Xp?

Press the windows key on the keyboard (normally located at two places, next to ctrl and alt), hold it in then press Pause on the keyboard, release both.

Now, in Xp click Advanced>Settings (Visual Effects,Virtual Memory....)>advanced>change>choose custom size>Open calculator, or use one. Take the amount of RAM you have, for instance, 512 or 1024 and multiply it by 3.8, set the initial Virtual Memory size half of that value and the maximum size the total value.

Click set> ok>ok>ok

Now,

Restart your computer.

Open Outlook Express, click file and make sure it's not in "offline" mode, if there is a checkmark next to offline mode, click it to uncheck.

Send/receive and check if it's better ;)

Or he could just disable Virtual Memory completely since he has 2GB of RAM (although I'd really only recommend that once you have 4GB) :p

I missed the 3rd post ;)

Anyways, try what I suggested 2GB RAM = 2048 * 3.8 = 7782. Make the initial size 3900 and the maximum size 7782, that means should Xp use more memory at some stage, it won't rape your harddrive

thx for the suggestions I'll get him to try that...

with regards to a previous questions from someone:
--> No opportunity to respond to error message, just "Outlook Express encountered an unexpected problem while displaying this message. Check your computer for low memory or low disk space and try again."

When it appears, I'm unable to open mail in the inbox folder but it is possible to open mail in inbox sub-folders. <--

File->Folder->Compress all folders in OE

If outlook, compact the PST.

They do get like this sometimes if they aren't compacted... NTFS has a 4GB File limit, no memory limitations so it shouldn't be that...
