Ouya sub-$100 game box challenges console giants

I certainly hope so.

Anyway the Nvidia Shield has suddenly distracted me from this thing. Have you seen it? Tegra4, 720p 5' capacitive screen running 4.2.1, xbox controller, streams PC games AND plays Android games.

Hmm... now you have me interested... I'm very happy with my daughter's Tegra powered Nexus 7... /off to google Nvidia Shield.

Now that was a gaming console :D

We also have a Wii, and it is nice - but I prefer the simplicity of the Atari above the Wii.

Prefer simplicity eh? Then have I got a treat for you:

None of this fancy-schmancy 3D graphics BS the kids play with these days. This thing's graphics = dots. Two of them. Doesn't get much simpler than that. :p

As for the Oy Vey, I never had much hope for it really. And you can bet it will cost a lot more than $99 if it gets sold here.

Ok... Nvidia Shield looks like a nice concept, but major flaws:
The final stipulation/caveat I'll mention is the fact that in order to stream games, the PC you're connected to must house a GeForce GTX 650 or later to function. AMD/ATI owners need not apply.
Also... latency? No thanks.

The ouya is likely going to need it's own section in the android market or risk cluttering it. Most current titles are for on screen or accelerometer control. Ouya are going to potentially attract developers to make handheld controlled games for Android - but they're going to be developing their titles for Ouya only if they are traditional games and require handheld controls. There's a gotcha right there... unless people start using third party controls or can get Ouya controls from your local mall, it's not likely to pick up in a hurry IMO.

You didn't think Nvidia would insist on an Nvidia card being used? Haven't seen these Nvidia guys much I guess?

Theoretical latency or documented?

Well, I doubt this will take off but something like it will eventually. Sourcing the games library of the Android Play Store vs paying $60 for a title is going to be pretty compelling.

How did the final product end up looking so much tackier than the mockups? I would never buy that thing.

That's NOT the final product. That's the free version that they shipped out to the developers who signed up during the fund raising stage.
The final product is still months away.

It states that quite clearly in the article.

Admittedly I haven't read all of the articles, but how do the game developers make money?

There is an app world and you will be able to purchase games from there like on steam or appworld.

The model will be either small cheap games or free games where you pay for extra content inside the game.

Oh whew. Teach me to read hey.

15 OUYA games to watch [VIDEOS]

http://phandroid.com/2013/01/22/ouya-launch-games/

OUYA, the Android-based gaming console, is set to launch in March. Its success will largely depend on developer support: will there be enough games, quality games, and variety? In anticipation of the big debut, we’re running a series of posts highlighting some of the early-adopting OUYA devs (both large and small) and their upcoming games. The series is being done in conjunction with OUYAboards.com and GameFans.com where you can find more extensive coverage of the console, its games, and the developers behind them......

Click the link above to see the Videos.

All those games look crap to me. They are more phone games than console games. Pretty sure you can achieve the same thing with a phone connected to your tv & a wireless controller.
This is not going to compete in the same market as xbox, ps or wii.

Nothing for $99 will compete with a dedicated console. That said, time will tell when traditional game devs actually have an android console to dev for IMO.

yeh, was just about to post about this.
problem here is download, all games probably need to be downloaded and with ****ty expensive internet, not going to work for me.

Can't get uncapped as well, no Telkom where I live in the middle of no-where, actually Midrand just Telkom won't replace stolen cables in my area anymore :(

The fact that these guys raise over US$8mil is amazing.

At US$99 it's actually a pretty good deal. Why? Well for starters you get two controllers which is pretty cheap. You also get a quad core Tegra 3 cpu. You don't have to use this as a console, there are many other application. It's only about 3x more than a B model Raspberry Pi but the specs are way better, granted the target market is not exactly the same.

I would not mind one of these little 'consoles'.

Two controllers? Are you sure?
AFAIK it's one. Extra controller is now $50 - up from $30. Perhaps I'm wrong?
Android is way more efficient on this kind of device than Debian - hence the better performance.

No. You know what they say about assumptions... :D

Their original order page shows the extra controller at $30 briefly before redirecting you to a page where it's shown at $50. If you're quick enough you can stop the redirect and place an order lol.

OK, so my OUYA arrived today finally. After spending like two weeks in Customs.
I had to pay R100.00 for the VAT or whatever at the Post Office.

Here are the first pics...
