Ouya: USD99 game console challenges Xbox, PlayStation

OUYA's pace of updates and new releases for this thing is astonishing!
The last few updates have enabled the additional external storage, so now I can begin to download some seriously large games.
What is still amazing though is that I haven't come across a game yet that costs more than $5.00!
It's cool to be able to play the first level or a demo, and then decide if you wanna purchase it or not.
The other consoles could learn a lot from this!

Well, when it arrived, both my son and myself were excited to play with the new gadget in the house. Build quality etc... is great and was very happy with that.
The UI is simple and easy to get around. It did a firmware update soon after connecting to the net. All good...

Then we went downloading games. LOTS of games. We queued up a whole lot of them then left the device to do it's thing for a bit. Came back later to find only 3 games downloaded and the rest we had queued simply "unqueued" themselves. So we had to select again. No big issue, just annoying.

The range of quality games is cr@p. But it is a new device so I am prepared to give them time to get some good stuff on it.

After Shadowrun (think it is called that) downloaded, we played it straight away. Probably the most high end game available. Game ran well and graphics looked good. Until we got into a fight. When there is action on the screen, we experience frame drops and the game stutters a bit. Worst is the controller lags when this is happening. Push left, and 0.5 seconds later your guy moves. Not good.
Again - new device - so prepared to give them time to fix this. In the meantime we decided to stick to the smaller games.

Then the crux... Come Saturday, I decided to go watch a movie. Fired up the Plex Client and all looked good. Started the movie and started getting odd bits of stuttering. Movie was not smooth at all, and while still watchable - it was annoying.

The Plex issue was the last time I used it. I stick to my Roku in my home theater room still and will give the Ouya a bash in a few weeks when hopefully some firmware updates have fixed the issues and hopefully there is a better range of apps. If it still fails me in a few weeks, I will sell it off again.

It only cost R1,300 so I am okay with the issues - for now. They must be fixed over the next few weeks though.
 
The thing is pretty epic with XBMC... haven't tried Plex yet though.
 
Can anyone test if ps2 games will work?My fiance will only play Def Jam FFNY with me.

Yep... that's raspberry pi right there. Good for some stuff but not great for realtime...

Android is great for some stuff but gaming I'm not so sure. It's crazy but we were gaming on sub 1Ghz single core CPUs some time back... these new gadgets should work. I dont think you're going to see it fixed TBH, I think it's a hardware and platform issue myself.

Roku on the other hand... what's your take on that? Any issues with some formats? I've been thinking of Roku 3 myself but would love to have my 3Tb HDD connected to it and available on the LAN to other PCs.

Ye - I did the dedicated home theater PC in a Zalman case, then WDTV's, then Pi's, then then .... Roku kicks all their combined butts.
Got 2 x Roku 2's and a Roku 3 with the second Roku 3 arriving later this afternoon or tomorrow. The Roku just does what it must. Simple as that.

The hardware spec of the Ouya is pretty decent. Was confused about the lag. Will see what the next few weeks brings. As it stands right now, I have no use for it. If I want to play games, I use XBox or my Alienware. If I want to watch movies/series, I use the Roku. I would like to see the Ouya become a nice stable light gaming machine that is capable of streaming my movies and stuff with no issue. Would be a nice addition to the gadget collection.

mwuhahahaha. :)

I have tried the XBMC thing. I have too many rooms hooked up that require sync to be bothered trying to hack XBMC to work like Plex does already.
Besides, once you get used to OnDeck, Unwatched, etc... on Plex, XBMC really starts to lag behind.

Plex just recently released their multi user setup, so it now has everything I need. I don't care for customising the UI cause I only see it long enough to select my conent :)

They already allow that, for years now... :confused:

Sure but Gary touts it as a feature, when it's been available on at least Xbox Live since it's inception...
