Ouya: USD99 game console challenges Xbox, PlayStation

Let's not kid ourselves, after reading the reviews I don't think they have much to worry about.

Of course not - it's a device you'll buy as well as your xbox / PS. At that price, it's not about if, but "why not"? Especially people with kids.

What it should be challenging is appleTV among other things. It's a smart tv interface with gaming capabilities. In the web applications category it beats all consoles out there hands down.

I don't know hey...

Firstly the biggest and fastest growing gaming platform is mobile. Everyone is developing for that now... its quick and easy and cheap, plus you have a massive market with tonnes of devices.

The Uuya brings those games to your TV at a pretty good price. Sure they are not going to be releasing AAA games but a lot of what is being played at the moment will be available.

At under a grand it could do very well, indy games are big right now.

We have released a game for the OUYA (got a devkit). Is it a good console? Yes, it has tons of potential. A few issues in the beginning, but they are ironing them out now.

Not a PS4 or X1 competitor, more like a hobbyist and casual console. I got my old PS1 games running on it a few days ago - now I play it every day. There are a couple of real killer games available on the store (Bombsquad, for example). Overall it still needs work though. Devs need to prove they can help sell the system with great exclusives.

Newer phones al already more powerful and offer better gaming specs from what I read somewhere.

I was wondering about something.

How dependent is this thing on an internet connection

I hear that you can run some emulators on it. SNES, Genesis, N64, NES and DS all in 1 console for $99... yes please!

I guess if your phone can connect to your TV and allows a bluetooth gaming device, that's OK. $99 isn't a lot for what you get IMO.

What is the controller like? Does it use BT or RF?

Also what will the landed price be? $99 does sound appealing. R2,000, not so much.

Well, you can sideload android games without having to connect it to the web. However, the store requires an ethernet or WiFi connection.

Early controllers were crap. Lots of issues. However, they built a newer one a month or two ago and apparently they are a lot better. If all else fails you can use a PS3 or Xbox controller via bluetooth. Can't speculate on the quality of the new one as they are still shipping us a replacement.

$99 is the RRP yes, however I don't know of local stockists

In that case hells yeah I want one.

PS1 as well!

Any idea when it will be available in SA? I so want this as a media center device!

Did you get two controllers, Gary?

No, I will have to order a second one. I didn't realise at first that it only came with one.
In fact, there has been a firmware upgrade on the controllers since I ordered, so I might just order two new ones and keep the first as a spare.

If you’re receiving this note, you’re very likely an OUYA’n who placed an order for at least one additional OUYA controller to go along with your OUYA console.

For that, we say “thank you” -- and -- unfortunately, due to an overwhelming number of you ordering additional controllers, there’s a good chance that you will receive your OUYA console (which includes with one controller) BEFORE receiving your additional controller(s).

We thought you should know. Sucks, we agree -- but -- the good news is that you’ll be receiving the latest controller(s) with the most up-to-date firmware (in English --> we’ve made some improvements to our controllers based on gamer feedback and you’ll have the latest version).

Although we don’t yet have a specific date on when the additional controller shipments will begin hitting doorsteps, we anticipate the first wave to leave our factory in 2-3 weeks. When they do start shipping out, you should expect to receive a new shipping confirmation email to alert you that it’s on the way.

So -- we apologize for the confusion -- we felt we had to make this call in order to: a) send your OUYA as soon as possible and b) give our production facility the extra time needed to crank out the additional controllers to fulfill 100% of our early backer and pre-order shipments. Hopefully you understand.

Until next time, thanks for your patience + support -- OUYA on!

Chad
