Overclocking advice for intel dual cores, please.

I know cooling's an issue, but the Intel Dual Cores and Core 2 Duo apparently overclock quite well on stock cooling, and I'm not really intending to push it really far, I just want a faster processor for less.

Here http://www.legionhardware.com/document.php?id=653 they got 3ghz with E2160 on stock cooling, 3.4 with a slight voltage and cooler upgrade, though they do mention the Cooler+CPU price makes it perhaps more worthwhile to get a better CPU to begin with.
Most other Intel Dual Core overclocks on reviews I've read are that good.

Anyway +-3GHz is cool for me. I'm sure it will beat a AM2 4000+ X2 at stock speeds, by quite a ways judging from that result.

And I didn't know the HD3850 was that good, I thought it would be significantly less than 8800gts. I thought 8800gts was just under 8800gt performance wise. And HD3850 just above 8600gts?

Wow, that's awesome. Is it likely i'll be able to get around that speed just on stock cooling?

Yes, your CPU can tolerate high temp, and nowadays new cpu generates less heat so even after OC it will still stay within a reasonable temperature. Just depends how paranoid you are towards this ;)
 
I bought my Q6600 with the intention of overclocking it from 2.4GHz to 3GHz and, even though the temps are a bit higher, it was worth it. If the chip is capable of operating at that speed, why run it slower? ;)
 
Potatoes/Potah-toes. The argument about the justification of overclocking is an old one and people are free to try and push their performance. Some of us tried it and lost interest after a year.
 
The over clocking thing isn't just about gaining some extra speed, it is about pushing boundaries and getting something more than what you paid for by doing it "yourself".
 
Hey CyberArmy, what are your settings for your E4500, i've just got one and want to push my cpu a bit harder to deal with Flight Simulator X (the real system killer). I have a G31 mobo with 1x2gb DDR2 800mhz ram and a 8400GS:sick:. What settings can I use to get good oc performance without having to change stock cooling?

PS. Sorry for the thread hijack but I guess its better than posting a new topic. :D

It's not your CPU that you should be worried about, it's your graphics card... Get a decent one, the 8400GS isn't a gaming graphics card.

I got the G31 MB too, Same 2 sticks of 1G DDRII 800. I am not pushing that hard now, you can see only from 2.2 to 2.75. Which G31 you got? Different MB has different BIOS settings. You can PM me if you want to....

But as carderne mentioned, bottleneck of your system is the 8400GS, althought OC your CPU may give a little improvement (if any for these type of game), if your budget allows you, get something like a ATI HD3850 (greate deal R1599)or a second hand 7900 series maybe...

hey cyberarmy you got pm. I know my GPU sucks, but actually if you run FSX without AA it there is some 6 FPS difference between 8400gs and 8800GT, Flight Sim is very processor and ram hungry. But I am busy saving up for a new one anywayz.
