Overclocking advice for intel dual cores, please.

Okay, I can;t actually see a sticky for Ocing, just one for ocing software.

Not at all, I get that you say P35 can have memory and cpu set independantly.
I don't know what G31 is :-) Googling it right now...

What I meant was mine MB's chip G31 is similar to your 945 which also links the FSB of CPU and mem together, so when I increase FSB to OC the CPU, I have to lower the multiplier for my ram, therefore ram run at a slower but stable speed which CPU is faster.

has all the toys of the big boards. Gigabit Lan, 4 internal sata + 1 Esata, 10 USB ect, 8 channel sound.

I have sold 2 of those with 2160's. one reached 2.8ghz on stock voltage and DDR2 800 RAM and the other reached 3Ghz.

But benching them showed little benefit past 2.6ghz. it then benches about the same as the E6550. Also the temps were still under 55 with that new Tiny Intel Cooler.

To overclock with them, you set the FSB higher (about 1066 to start with, giving you 2.4Ghz) and then lower the memory ratio's until you are blow the speed rating of your ram (DDR2-667 or DDR2-800 depending on ram).
 
The P965 chipset is fine, just cut back on the mem multiplier. For example, the fsb on the 2160 is 200Mhz (200 x 9 = 1.8Ghz), if you use DDR2 667 memory your mem multiplier will be 3.33 (3.33 x 200 = 666). This means that if you bump your fsb up to 266Mhz (266 x 9 = 2.4Ghz) you will have to change the mem multiplier to 2.5 (266 x 2.5 = 665). Some motherboards don't have the exact multiplier you are looking for, don't worry, just use the closest one.

The cpu's with 11 x multiplier works very well (266 x 11 = 2.9Ghz), this is with stock cooling and voltages.

Just buy a faster system. Overclocking doesn't make a very marked difference in performance anyway.
Overclocking is like driving a car at full throttle all the time - not very good for the engine...

Gone are the good ol' days of running a 286 or XT in "Turbo" mode! :))

well if those cpu's could have oced well it the 286's would have 486's :)

the memory being tied into the fsb bus is nothing, just your memory multiplier to 2
 
I can whole heartedly encourage you to overclock the hell out of any cpy you plan to buy.

Good cooling will stand you in good stead.

What's a good Intel with an 11x multiplier? Also a cheap one.

It seems to me that the cheapest is E4500, but that's like double the price of E2160. I think I'll go the cheaper route. Also if I only have a HD3850 I'm sure a way faster processor will be bottlenecked anyway, will it not?

What do mean only an HD3850? That card rocks. Equal and better in some cases to 8800GTS 320MB.

The new E2200 - 2.20Ghz (200 x 11), costs around R250-00 more than E2160.:D
 
Just a point on OC'ing which hasn't been mentioned as such: in order to achieve dramatic speed increases without overheating the components, one needs to invest in good cooling. That investment could've been put into a faster component which will perform better without overheating.

Having overclocked items myself, I fully appreciate the urge to achieve better performance for a lower cost than the high-end items. The 2 main motivations are either actual, noticeable speed improvements, or bragging-rights with benchmarks.

In either case, you'd be forced to buy better cooling, or be satisfied with a 10% improvement which is hardly noticeable. Rather spend the extra R500 on a slightly faster item.

One doesnt HAVE to spend on extra/better cooling, if you dont increase the voltage the temperatures dont really get that much higher if the a modest increase. And if you cant see the 10% to 20% difference when playing your games or the reduced times when encoding that movie, its not my fault...

The extra cooling is always nice to have, but not really needed if you are not going to push your cpu way past 3Ghz. My E4500 is running @ 2.93Ghz (266 x 11) on stock cooling, and the temp goes up to about 46 degrees under load. When i push the fsb up to 333 i definitely need a better cooler.
