Anyone know if there is a way to override the Primary / Secondary DNS settings on mobile device, whether on "firmware" level or O/S level. Any ideas welcome.

* Custom DHCP pool at router level with custom DNS.
* Root device and edit hosts file if possible (if you want to point certain domains / hosts to other ip's).

What jsheed said. The only way (without rooting your device) is to control the wireless access point and override the DNS there

thank you for the suggestion, have already considered; the problem is, we're working with a device that uses a simcard to connect to the cel network where we don't have wifi as an alternative.

Is there a way that for instance Vodacom can be requested to provide a private data network, without actually having to create a VPN, but for specific numbers/sim's on their network?

Vodacom can do it, but I don't think they will. Problem is with 3G/4G device, it should give such option. The same comment from envo applies when you don't have wireless access point, but ordinary Ethernet router.
