Parallels on External HDD

I think it would be more like having the mini and the ram working 100% and another guy having a defective enclosure. :p

You've still got the USB2 and I've heard (granted it was from a windows user :p) that USB2 is just as good ;)

You know you're only supposed to have either one or the other plugged in at any given time? Just checking :D

Oh paleeez! You sure that came out his mouth and not his @ss? :D

Yes dear. Unless the USB plug is pure power, no data :p

I thought about this whole thing on my way to work this morning. It is quite possible that it is a question of WinXP just hanging (like Windows OS systems do).

Next step for me will be to recreate the WinXP VM, but directly on the Firewire External. Maybe that will help, I don't know, but it is worth a try.

If its a system hang it should act the same way regardless of if it is on the internal or the external drive - have you tried copying it back to the internal to see if it behaves there?

Nope, I haven't copied it back to the MBP system, but I have swapped out the FW cable for the USB2 one, and then it works fine. I left it on USB last night, and it was still up and running this morning when I left for work ... Ag, I dunno anymore :(

I wonder if this circle is ever going to get to a point :D

I have noticed that when starting up Parallels VM with the FW connection, and the VM "hangs", the CPU utilisation skyrockets to ±70%, and I can hear the colling fans going apesh!t under the bonnet. Dunno what it is, but its quite interesting to me :p

Get a decent enclosure :p

Hmm, I like bwana v.21 the most, please bring him back :D

You know, if I could find another one, I probably will replace this one, but I have yet to see another 800 model ... yes yes, I know I don't even have the cable, but still :D

hmm - v.21 - dont recall him being anything special.

Seeing as you're keen on having a portable external why not keep the one you have for use on the road and then get a fullscale one for home where you can stick in a 500gb drive and keep everything backed up.

Hmm, that is an option .... BBUUUTTTT, and if I jinx it this time round I WILL kill myself, so be prepared if I am not here tomorrow, Parallels XP VM has been running now for 15 minutes, without giving me ****, ie. hanging, and the FW drive is functioning normal in Mac OS X as well. And I am not telling what I did to get it to work (touch wood with metal rod) :p

Fix (hopefully): I changed the virtual hard disk cache policy to give me better performance on the VM, and not Mac OS X ... maybe something to do with the speed of FW against the speed of USB.

anyways, shut down and going to fire it up again (no pun intended) to see what happens

EDIT: Geez, started and logged into WinXP in under 25 seconds :D

Closure of this thread (for me in any case): VM under Firewire running for 39 minutes now ... all seems sorted.

And on the subject on Parallels: The nicest feature of the new Beta is the fact that you can drag and drop between Mac OSX and the VM ... works very nicely (I think BobJones was inquiring about this)

I liked the idea of containment. What happens in [-]Vegas[/-] Windows should stay in windows :D

Congrats on getting it sorted. :)

lol! I do too (hence the vm files located on an external drive), but it does make life a bit easier.

Congrats on getting it sorted. :)

tx! About 22 hours worth of effort later, and it was one radio button that had to be changed .. typical :)

Ohh, I can like to are a daredevil now. Even unplugged the additional USB power source ... still going like a boeing!

Good going Landy, glad its working properly for you now. Thanks for the info too - I might give this new beta a go.

Anyone else hear the rumours that Apple may buy Parallels and include it in Leopard?

Yeah - I heard (saw on digg actually) that rumour. Probably why I'm reluctant to buy it now.

These rumour sites have quite an impact...
I wonder how many sales of 30/80GB ipods have been lost/postponed becuase of the "full-screen" ipod rumours.

Gruber at daring fireball has posts on the "iphone" that go back to 2002!
