Hi guys,

I do my first and hopefully last driving test on the 12th of December.
I'm not sure if it's too early or what not, but I'm not exceptionally nervous.

I've been doing my driving lessons with Assist-u-drive and they have been going well (according to me) and my driving has come a long way since I started about 2 months ago.

I would love to hear any hints and tips from you guys as I really do not want to fail but I have faith in myself and I shouldn't fail but with that said, ANY hints and tips would be great.

My test is in Hillstar and I haven't done any driving in that area (all my driving and such as been in CBD central) but I plan to do some driving in that area closer to the day of the test (like a week or so)

I feel very confident with my actual driving.
When it comes to my yard stuff like 3 point parking, alley docking and parrellel then I also feel okay but need to just practise more.

Oh, wrong thread. When I read the title, I thought you were going out on a drinking binge tonight ......

:D ;)

I can't believe you don't have your driver's licence yet
Anyway, I passed out first time at Hillstar. Just do what you're supposed to and don't speak unless spoken to. There is no other advice. Either you can drive or you can't ;)

Well, I don't, I'm a poor white boy.
Why get a drivers if i can't afford a car... thats always been my attitude till now.

What you mean, don't speak unless spoken too?

Just a note, as this happened with someone in our office...
Even if the instructor tells you to pass someone when you're next to a solid white line... DON'T DO IT. DON'T BREAK THE LAW.
What happened then, later on he asked for a R1200 bribe, or you Fail because you didn't listen to his instructions. Don't pay him. There are lawyers who'll take your case, and have the testing instructor fired/sued/killed (whatever they do)..

I really hope that this doesn't happen to you. If it does, PM me, I'll direct you to the lawyer who took our collage's case. (Or collage is a cleaner... so, the lawyer keeps the charge very low)

Don't chat, but do make sure you say what you're doing - if you do your 360 check, say that you're doing it.

The hillstar area's okay, but there are one or two places where you have to be careful to stay in your lane - as you turn, you think there's a left lane but it's actually a very wide emergency lane. I did my test there, it wasn't too bad :)

Depends a lot on the instructor too - mine took a phone call on his cell as I drove out the yard, and only finished about half way through my test.

I'm not rich by any means, but it's important to have your licence, especially when it comes to jobhunting etc... I don't have a car either.

Some of them are grumpy and don't like talkative/bubbly people. If it helps, don't dress up - they might hold it against you if you look rich... You gotta make use of psychology to get your way ;)

That's a tricky one, actually. Yes, it's against the law to cross a solid white line, but a traffic officer's command always supercedes the law.

What they do sometimes is try to trick you - they won't actually tell you to go through a red light, but will make you think you should.

Of course if they're actually corrupt and looking for bribes then you can't win either way :(

Thanks CathJ & mercurial, keep the tips coming.

The more I know, the better I feel on the day.

Right now, I really am not too phased by the test at all but having said that, when it comes to tests, I never do too well, but I yeah... don't wanna fail, that's all.

I did that!! Everytime I saw the guy reaching for his clip board ill say, "check side mirror, left mirror, rearview mirror"(something like that) even if I was looking, ill just move my head:p It works, do it!!

The most important tip, actually, is to be there early. You'll probably have to wait for ages anyway, but they get very anti if you turn up a minute or two late or just on time.

Some dude working at a licensing center doesn't have the authority to command you to overtake on a solid white line..

Trust me, I hated driving and was schit nervous on the day. My appointment was actually brought forward by a few months and you can imagine what went through my mind. I was nervous and got the one parallel parking wrong the first time, but I just asked him if I can redo it, which I did and it went well. The important thing for me was just to make sure I get out of the parking area. Once that was accomplished, I knew I would pass, cos driving on the road is easy.

Any tips for Gdiza, are tips for me, as I will write mine in about 4 or 5 months :D:D

Not some random dude, no, but the guy who goes with you on your test is an official traffic officer.
