Pathetic 3G Service

Quite a few people phoned in. The last call was from a lady (at about 8:45) that has written a letter to Pieter Uys, Vodacom techs went out to her premises etc, to cut a long story short Vodacom admitted to her (quoting her phonecall on 702) that their towers are over capacity and they cant handle all the connections...

John Robbie also commented that many SMS messages are streaming through the call desk about the problem.

Upgrading software doesnt work - we have been through that. Read my original post on page 1. As I mentioned, even the guys working at Vodashop in Fourways Mall are having these issues - they personally told us that many customers are experiencing this.

OK...not saying Software upgrades is the answer for all. But in some cases it really does do the trick. My friends E220 one day just stopped working. Refused to connect. I updated his firmware and it worked better than ever after that.

I am not confirming or denying the congestion on the network as I dont have access to that info. But I am certain that if Vodacom could, they would be rolling out more BTS's at a faster speed. But so many factors are involved in doing this.

1. Finding a appropraite new site that will benefit as many people as possible.
2. Getting approval from all the concerned municipal and neighborhood bodies
3. Erecting the tower (dont think this takes too long though)
4. Getting Telkom to supply sufficient backhaul to the tower.

I have been waiting for over a year now I think it is for the new site in Bruma to go live. I think I actually saw the tower, but according to Vodacom still waiting for backhaul.

Yeah Ocleroux is quite right. Rollout takes time unfortunately. I think signups have been a lot faster for Vodacom than they anticipated. We live in a country where everything is underestimated when it comes to uptake of a "new" technology/product.

We are all nagging for lower data rates (I know i am). But Vodacom can hardly keep up as it is. A bit of a fail so far....

Oh and lets not forget the delay the people causes that starts marching with "No micro waves in our backyard" posters when a new BTS pops up to close to home :-) (kidding):D

Very true indeed! People are greedy sods. Ill be glow in the dark anytime to let the people around me enjoy cheaper internet. :D

Perhaps you even turn into a "X-Men" charachter after being blasted long enough by the humming BTS in your backyard Jono hehe.

Now THAT's something i could live with. Just no rash on my peepee please. :erm:

As long as i can lay a little cable to this BTS...;)

hehe...I think those things are pretty much unpenetrable. Why you think you never see "Vodacom BTS stolen" in the news?

hehehe, true....Thats why YOU or VodacomData will open that little door for me. :D

I wish I had access to the BTS in my area. Just think....you plug your laptop in and surf to your hearts content...but unfortunately I dont have access. :-( I would love to actually be shown the inside of BTS to see what it looks like inside. That and climb into a Rolls Royce turbo fan engine to see what it looks like inside hehe. Anyway, getting a bit off topic so will shut up now. :-)

If i had access to such a connection, funny thing is i wouldnt even abuse it...casual Browsing, stream radio through winamp whilst i prepare supper. Or WoW'ing without having to *111# before I can go to a Raid. Only things I would torrent is audio samples.

Vodacom give me a 30gig cap at the current price and im happier than a pig in poo. :D (well uncapped would be ideal, id pay R 800 for it even, but thats max i can afford right now)

I have been without 3G since around 16:00 yesterday, which was about an hour before the thunderstorm hit us.

I waited until 22:00 to report the problem. In the past, this type of fault would have been sorted out overnight, but, much to my surprise, it was still off at 06:30.

I called 155 and they told me that the technical guys only start work at 08:00!!

I called again at 10:54 and was told that their computer system was off-line! They also told me that no one else had complained, which I believe is bull, especially seeing that I am situated in a densely populated area, close to UJ. There are many students in this area and I am sure that a lot of them use 3G.

Anyway, they asked me to call back in an hour, but I told them to rather contact me when the system was back up.

At 11:55 a very helpful guy (Yusuf) called back and I eventually proved to him that the problem lay with the local base station.

So, now I wait ... and wait ... and wait ...

Anyone here in the same area to confirm the same problem? Did you receive a ref number that you can perhaps forward on to VodacomData? VD, you aware of any problems in that area?

The original call-taker promised to text it to me, but ... nada!

The problem is also on my cellphone, so it's definitely a VC problem. It's actually been a re-occurring problem over the last 2 or 3 months. After the previous incident a few weeks ago, I thought that the problem had been resolved and have been very happy with the service since then.

Damn, but this GPRS is frustratingly S-L-O-W!!!!

A friend of mine stays in Auckland Park. He has not complained and went through a whole gig on Monday. Wonder if he is working of a different tower. Will ask him if he had problems last night.

So climb up there and check it out :-)

Have sent my friend a sms asking him, but no delivery report coming back. He works in the Hyde Park area, so might be affected by the cable break....or more likely, in a meeting. Will post when he comes back to me.

Have you tried turning your phone off and on again? :p
