Patrick Lambie vs Mornè Steyn

Butch tackles like Hendry Honiball back in the day. Hard and crunchy like fresh kelloggs corn flakes.

Nothing much else to write out about his game, just his sheer physical presence....not enough in my book to pencil in his name in the squad!!!

So what you want someone who cannot tackle in his place? I could be mistaken but rugby is physical game, if you do not have physical players well then i guess you end up looking like the boks last weekend.

Butch needs to learn how to tackle properly without being yellow carded or sin binned. Also he is abit suspect with his goal kicking and his general positional play leaves alot to be desired. Not much spark or creativity when compared to Lambie.

I'm with SinghDude on this. Butch does nothing but tackle. I have seen the others tackle to. So what should give him the spot above someone else?

I would rather see him at nr 10. The nr 15 position is not as important as the nr 10.

Also we have a bit more choice at fullback while at flyhalf we are not exactly blessed with many options.

Well let's look at where our issues lie at the moment: they're in defence, where Morne is atrocious. His tactical kicking game is very good and he has a solid boot at poles, and then again we have that in Lambie, Steyn and Butch James too. Morne is not the right man for the job going in to the World Cup in my opinion.

Regarding Peter Grant, he does most things okay, but he lacks that X-factor. There's no aspect of his game that is exemplary and for this reason I'm glad he's not in the running for the position.

Lambie is still young though, that much is correct. I believe we have a better chance playing Butch at flyhalf, with Lambie on the bench as his replacement and Frans Steyn at fullback...

Hehe this should bring back memories of a similar thread a year or so ago...

Anyway,

My money is on Lambie. Sure he isn't as experienced as Mornè when it comes to big games. But he has played against the best in the world and I'm more than convinced he has what it takes to be the next super hero in the Bok squad. When I'm saying this I'm talking about a complete flyhalf. Everyone has his pro's and con's.

But given a choice between these 2 I would field Lambie above Steyn currently.

What do you guys think?

[It was quite the debate on the Steyn vs Pienaar]
At this point in time, Still Steyn

Steyn hasn't done anything to loose his position at 10, but what i would recommend is that we let Lambie play at Full back [best seat to look at what #10 is doing]. and then either let Lambie be flyhalf for the "less important" games [in WC], and let Steyn be #10 for the bigger games. thus, we would ease Lambie into #10, and not sink of swim as we SA'cans tend to do to young stars.

Out of the lot, Butch has the best defensive game which is an area of concern for us right now. He also has a very good tactical head on his shoulders and can direct the backline very well. His tactical kicking game has improved tenfold since moving overseas too. He was our number one for quite some time for good reason and since then, he's only improved his game. His presence and experience on the field will be major factors as long as he can keep a cool head and not pull off neckline, swinging arm tackles like he did against The Sharks in the S15...

My issue with Morne Steyn is that he has been very inconsistent in every aspect apart from his kicking. I was a huge Morne Steyn fan, but he's slowly lost my support.

EDIT: if I think back to the last few games he played, he kicked away possession far too often and made a few schoolboy errors. I remember being a little pissed off with him -just not sure exactly why...:D

What about all of that experience, Devill? LOL...:p

Balance young one. ;) :p
Remeber everyone was crying for Francios Steyn to be flyhalf in the 2007 WC... Butch James (Imo a very average flyhalf) reminded us that a steady performance in the world cup with some experience is what you are Looking for to lift the old William's cup.

I also remeber a very good flyhalf called hougaard... we royally fscked him up by throwing him to the wolves.

F. Steyn is to slow at the moment ,although I would love to see him at fullback for us. But I would not mind seeing him at inside centre when jean DV retires.

I just hope that we do not force players into positions and situations that will harm their natural abillity. Look at how well Cooper has done because he was not thrown to the wolves and tossed around from flyhalf to fullback to lock to hooker....

This is my biggest gripe with the whole rugby game all south African teams are playing. If you don't have the ball you can't score points. There is way too many clueless kicks down field in our rugby lately.

Quade Cooper has by an absolute mile been my player of the year so far. This is the calibre of player we'll need to defend and attack against. Morne Steyn simply cannot pull that off in my opinion. He is more flat-footed than a Chicken Licken rooster and we'd slip fewer tackles if we had Stevie Wonder at flyhalf.

Butch is still the man for the job.Lambie should not be thrown into 1st choice flyhalf just yet, especially not for the World Cup. And I'm a big fan of the lad - he has the potential to be our best flyhalf, but he simply isn't that right now...

Luckily we seem to change our game-play in World Cups and PDiv has gone back on his decision to play a different kind of test rugby and reverted back to the gameplan that won us the Webb Ellis in 2007. It's also for this reason that I believe that Morne is not the right man for the job, and Butch is...

Do you guys think it is fair to judge anyone with the current team?

While it's not entirely fair, there are some standout players who have shown the impact they can have, even in a weakened team. Deysel for one has been superb, but unfortunately not supported by anyone of equal talent in the Tri Nations so far. We can also highlight the weak players, such as Ashley Johnson who has had as much impact on the field as Hugh Bladen does in the commentary box - he's always fscking up. And don't even get me started on Wynand *spit* Olivier and let's face it, John Smit, to name a few...

After all the feedback in this thread I'm leaning towards this as well. I love the flair this guy has, but I'm also scared that we might just be putting too much pressure on him too early and it might just crack him. I think we should let him blossom and ease into the Bok no10 jersey on his own time.

Mine's not really about grooming him into the position, but rather that we have better flyhalves at the moment...
