Patrick Lambie vs Mornè Steyn

I think we are as thin at 15 as we are at 10. If you want Lambie to be in the starting XV he has to start at 15. You cannot leave Morne out. Despite all his shortcomings (and I'm not sure his defense is as poor as we make out) his goal kicking abilities are immense. Factor in Fourie Du Preez at 9 and a Bok pack going forward and Steyn's game will improve.

Our loose forwards on tour this season have been disjointed and in-cohesive and the impact its had on the defensive channels cannot be underestimated. Despite their efforts, Danie and Jean are too slow for international flankers and Stegman is no where...

Frans Steyn has to start at 15 with that HUGE boot of his. I think Lambie should be on the bench and come on in the last 20 minutes. Start with Morne or butch at 10.

Quade Cooper has by an absolute mile been my player of the year so far. This is the calibre of player we'll need to defend and attack against. Morne Steyn simply cannot pull that off in my opinion. He is more flat-footed than a Chicken Licken rooster and we'd slip fewer tackles if we had Stevie Wonder at flyhalf.

Butch is still the man for the job.Lambie should not be thrown into 1st choice flyhalf just yet, especially not for the World Cup. And I'm a big fan of the lad - he has the potential to be our best flyhalf, but he simply isn't that right now...

I agree. But I am afraid that if Butches aim for the 3 pointers are not on par we might not have any other optoin but to play Steyn. At least with our "A team" Steyn's defensive "problems" might be better hidden.

The issue with 15 can be resolved once 10 is sorted out. Lambie makes for a great 15, but so does Frans Steyn, so I believe we do have some depth there as long as we know what's happening at 10. You're right about the boot of Steyn, and Percy Montgomery showed us the value of this in 2007, however Percy was an allround performer back then - he brought far more than just his boot to the Boks and unfortunately, nothing about Morne's game of late has impressed me at all.

When I look at our backline, Morne Steyn props up as the weak link. We have a few of the best wingers in the world. Our centre pairing is truly inspiring when they get going. We have probably the best scrummie in the world. Yet we have a flyhalf who is less than impressive in Morne Steyn. I believe that PdV is experimenting at camp right now with this decision, which will prove to be one of the most important he will have to make.

Regarding the loose forwards, I couldn't agree more. Although we have some very good depth in these positions too. Brussow, Deysel, Burger, Alberts, Smith, Vermeulen - we have the loose forwards covered. And that's forgetting eighth man where if Spies fires, he is amazing to watch and scary to defend against. Kankowski has to be second choice at eighth man as much as I'd like to see him make the starting line-up...

Can't find Butch's kicking stats at the moment, but I don't think he's too far behind Morne. Maybe someone can find them?

I agree with this. For the WC Lambie should be the guy we bring on late in the game to give us a boost. If Aplon is fit by the time the WC starts I wouldn't have a problem with him starting at 15.

At the moment I would probably give Spies the nod just because of experience as he has lost a bit of what use to make him "The hope of all that is Rugby" a year or three ago :(
I do agree that we have a lot of cover for loosies so I am not too worried.

That would make me a very happy person :D

Butch james is just behind morne with kicking?

Show me those stats because i cannot believe that. Morne is one of the most accurate kickers in world rugby. Perhaps only carter is somewhere close to him.

Here's hoping we don't need Aplon at fullback. He certainly wouldn't be my first choice there. Nor second...

Bit harsh. It's exactly that flair that Gio brings to the back line which is so sorely missing.

Agreed. I don't think Butch has ever been 1st choice goal kicker for the Boks. I may be wrong though..

Or even 78th.

There are quite a few useless defenders that were trotted out on the past two Saturdays and the World Cup is about defence.

Well that's why I'm asking for the stats - can't find them. But I have a sneaky suspicion I'm far off the mark with that comment. Just looking at points scored, Morne is far ahead with fewer matches played, but the at goal percentage is what I'm really looking for...

Stats from the game on Saturday is that Morne missed his first kick in 39

We have enough flair with our full strength backline as it is. Lambie or Frans Steyn at fullback certainly have more flair than him. Gio Apon has his moments, but he is far too inconsistent to be in the starting line-up. I'd have to stretch my standards to put him in my squad to be honest. I'd sooner have Louis Ludik in at fullback than him...

Again I think that's a bit harsh. Stormers were the best defensive team in the Super 15 of which Aplon is a component. Everyone of our back line players was made to look fallible and for me it was all the missed tackles around the fringes that created pressure further down the back line.

One thing that has been grinding my balls as of late:

Centers are trained from a young age to run straight and straighten the line. This serves 2 purposes: 1 The wing can receive the ball at speed should the ball be sent out from the centers to the wings. 2 It pulls their defensive line in instead of having them drift to the side. If they do drift the centers get a gap the size of a boiler fitted in the old Iscor plants.

I have noticed the Jacques Fourie and Jean de Villiers have been running skew instead of straightening the line the last 2 seasons. THIS IS PISSING ME OFF TO NO END. They either need to sort this out or make place for people who can run straight. We have some very good centers doing it. Lots of the younger ones in the Currie Cup this weekend has been doing it and that is why the scores are so high.

I doubt we need to dig up morne vs james in the kicking department.

Morne is a class kicker, to kick 39 tri nations penalties in a row is insane. Has anyone ever done it? Who does butch even play for? i don't watch many currie cup games or super 15
