Pay-TV operators experience piracy problems

+1
Downloaded content will increase because of Multichoice's greedy penchant for moola!
They only have themselves to blame.
How much does it cost per month (for a South African) if you download all that you watch... And Gary compares the cost of one blue ray disc to the monthly subscription for DSTV where you can watch about 4 new HD movies a month.

I am not defending multichoice, but I think it is common place on the forum for people to justify their behaviour by comparing things that don't fit... And he says internet content if "free"?

Depends on how much you watch... how many movies, episodes a week, etc. But I think 30 Gigs will take you a long way to start with.

um, no I never compared them to each other. I mentioned them as two examples of exorbitant costs. But if the content owners had their way... that would be all you are allowed to watch a month. 4 new movies on DSTV or 1 new blu-ray disc. Most households consume far more content than that.

Then make it fit... that is the flexibility of the internet. You can customise your viewing tastes however you want. Whether you think it is legal or not... that is how easy it is. And you can compare it to anything you want... the Internet will always come out tops. Besides, I know people who don't even have internet access who are relying on their friends alone to get their content for them. In that case you can compare it to nothing.

And he says internet content if "free"?

I said, besides your ISP and site subscription fees... learn to read please.

Anyone who has a tv premium subscription to watch one movie a month probably doesn't need a tv, better off going to the big screen. I am talking about those who whine that DSTV is too expensive and then go off & get a R2000+ uncapped connection. If you cannot afford it, go cold turkey, try living within your means.

I was referring to the freeness of the content... not the connection (think you missed that in your reading).

Shame the rest of Africa must be really starving to want to pirate SABC.

There is piracy and there is piracy... this is where I think the line is very thin.

Its quite silly actaully, if you view this content in SA then its ok, its free, but if you are a few Km north in Zim then you are a pirate. SABC pays to broadcast this content in SA ONLY, some one else must pay for this to be broadcast in Zim and some one else for it to be broadcast in Mozam.

Its quite pathetic, and when you consider that they call this a crime. Why not get off your asses and licence the stuff in those contries ? Sell advertising that will cover the entire region ! Think out the box you fools, you broadcast the signal from a satelite that shines over half the continent, what do you expect ?

What is even worse is when DSTV do the same, they show the Sunday night movie on Saturday on their Mnet Africa channel... then they block the channel in SA ? What idiots.... so much of petty.

I have friends that live in india and pick up the DSTV signal over there, its nice to see SA channels when you are overseas, it makes you less homesick. They can pick up a DSTV signal but its illigal to do so because that is not one of the contries that they broadcast to. So they lie and give address in Angola, and pay over the internet.

OMG... They pay the right people and its still piracy ??!!!??? I have never heard anything stupider !

You don't need uncapped (and even if you do, you can get it for way cheaper than R2000). R200 a month will do you just fine. And it is their prerogative to live how they want to. Freedom of choice FTW!

so when are they going to start charging me? Cos I've been getting it for free for years now. ;)

I am entitled to my opinion, and in my logical mind, it 'fits'.

haha, +1..Imagine what these poor people must have to watch if they're pirating SABC..

SABC sucks big time..I think they possibly show 1 interesting modern movie a month..I prefer my PC screen anyday :)

Ja, you really do have to wonder.

Why can't they build a pirate decoder for Multichoice? Probably because Multichoice is a private company, and therefore actually cares about its bottom line.

keep in mind... YOUR SABC license fees pay for this - If you have seen the content in Africa, SABC is good. Another point to make is Most of Africa is French speaking, so SABC and DSTV are the only options. (and DSTV costs about $100 a month)

2) There is no advertising.
3) There is no region protection, copy protection, encryption, or DRM.

I'm actually more than willing to pay for movies, series or music if they fulfilled those conditions. But not R530 per month. R530 per year maybe.

Why does everyone write as if South Africa is not in Africa? Thats besides the point, in Zim, the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) is an extension of the ruling party and hence is highly biased. Besides Zim hasn't had money to buy "new" series such as the first series of Desperate House Wives. So SABC is not bad at all! Besides, it's free :-)

Who would want to Pirate SABC channels... :wtf:
LOL what I thought!

lol you obviously don't pay taxes then. R2 billion is not what I call free.

Comparing us to the rest of Africa is NOT a great idea. Why should we be comparing ourselves to the rest of Africa saying "well we are better than them still so that is OK"?

IMO we should be comparing ourselves to first world countries (the ones that aren't currently super-bankrupt :D) saying "how can we get to the position that country is in?".

Make that zero to one interesting Movie a year....

We still have a vivid decoder but their is nothing worthwhile on it. The true crime is not the SABC signal being pirated - it is that the SABC signal is broadcasted to begin with.

While the article is about pirating SABC channels, it must be noted that it's not only the South African channels that are broadcast. Some American channels are picked as well, and ofcourse a few DSTV channels. People in those countries watch more channels than we do in SA (without DSTV) because of piracy.

Aren't these pirates a good thing though? After all as the number of pirates increases so global warming will slow and eventually reverse.

Everyone accuses Africa of not going green properly but just look at the contribution Somalia is making to reverse the effects of global warming by filling the seas with pirates! Wake up sheeple! :p

When someone sells a PVR to record that crap, Africa will truly have reached the bottom of the barrel.

As somebody mentioned, anybody know more about these decoders ? Legal in ZA i presume. Sometimes it might be worth having to get good quality reception for sport on SABC (rare as it is :)
