What to use the PC for in the long term

Maybe I'm confusing the issue a bit, but what I also intend at some stage, is to implement SugarCRM with some of the Zucker plugins. So, SugarCRM on FF browser, MF printer that scans everything in sight (paperless, here I come). I am bypassing a lot of programmes like this, I hope - maybe then a chance to spec the new PC a bit lower, or not ?

I'm not going to get into the whole AMD vs Intel thing. But one thing that is prevalent throughout this thread that I totally agree with is : Dont get Vista until a year after release at the earliest! As with all their previous Windows versions, it takes time for them and manufacturers to get their act together. Windows XP is quite stable ATM.

PC configuration now server configuration

I've been asking around and rethinking my strategy. As my main project is mentioned here : http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=41677&highlight=vtiger I am now looking at getting a server first.
The server needs to do the following :
  1. Host VTiger database
  2. Host my website (to interface with VTiger at some stage, for remote access)
  3. Host a server-install version of Thunderbird
  4. Make back-ups of all network activity and web site data
  5. Host a fax server
  6. Act as general server for all client machines (2 laptops, 2 PC's, maybe one or two PDA's later)
  7. Host a VOIP service, eg Asterisk, including call centre/PABX capabilities
  8. Host security traffic, eg webcameras on the premises, entrance gate etc.
At present I rent one PC from a supplier, who is willing to rent me the server as soon as I provide him with the hardware specs

I intend making use of Linux if I can. The client stations will run on XP Pro (will that be possible?)

Can the forum firstly help me with some specs on the hardware ?

ok wait... all bull aside.
forget graphics. what is a vista ready pc?
i got a amd64 and a gig ram. now should that run vista or not?
[edit] just answered my own question but i suggest stay with XP for as long as you can. (if you remember when XP came out. I actually downgraded my brand new computer to windows 98 because I couldn’t run certain games and programs **plus it was dam slow** ) [/edit]

Can I then spec the server to be "Vista ready", "64 bit ready", "Linux ready" all in one, whilst running XP Pro for now ?
