PC dead ... or at least I hope not! Tech help needed?

So i was playing some BFBC2 and suddenly the pc freezes and the screen starts going dark
with a few hues or purple still hanging about, so I freak out as this is the first time in 3 yrs that
my angel decides to kill over and during an awesome round of rush to :(

I reboot only to see my screen riddled with funny lines and colours all over the place
but only when the OS is loading, during bios and pre OS screen is fine, as the OS loads
she freezes again, go back into safemode and everything works gr8, swapped cable from
dig to analog same thing, tried dig cable again and it wouldnt pic up.

then formatted pc just for the hell of it and exactly the same pre OS all is gr8 as soon
as OS loads screen goes funny and freezes, but works fine in safemode

Im thinking i need a new graphics card ... any advice? OH tried my monitor on another pc
works fine, dont have any space graphics cards to test with :{ .... help???
 
Sounds like the GPU is toast. Safe mode uses minimum drivers, but as soon as you log into windows normally the proper drivers kick in which put too much stress on a broken GPU. Small chance your power supply is the cause, but unlikely. Try putting a different PSU in to make sure. Otherwise its upgrade time!
 
Grafix Card its toast ! Seen this many times in my PC techie days. Any chance you overclocked?

Unlikely your PSU, but I always check that first as it is the number #1 problem. Still go with Grafix card.
 
My guess is your graphics card is dead, to confirm this, test it in another pc.

Also just in case, check all the fans are running and nothing is clogged up with dust.
 
Sounds like what happened to my 8800GT. It will only get worse from here, so my advice is get a replacement card.
 
+1 on toasted gpu
had a similar situation playing Need for Speed Underground on my mum's laptop with some crappy 64mb ATI... the chip itself melted :-/

No, please please please do not buy that. Get a 5850/5870 instead. Much better value for money
 
hmmm i know i've been seeing reviews all over the show about the 5870 being better value than the GTX 480 but im just not a ATI fan.
Not really fond of the drivers that come with them always seemed to have given me issues in the past.

how much have they improved over the last 3 yrs as apposed to Nvidia's drivers ?

oh btw the card that died what a 8800 GTS 320 just like Isengard's
 
Well ATI now releases drivers every month, and do release ones inbetween if there is a major issue. Think of it like this, 3 years ago ATI was playing catch up, and now they managed to release their DX11 part 6 months ahead of nvidia. And in that 6 months that nvidia was late all they could do was try and get a stable chip. In fact, check what nvidia was going to release (press releases around Oct 2009), and what they were forced to release. Speaks volumes of the probs they have had with the 400 series.
But if you need an extra heater in your room, get the GTX480 by all means.

ya, had the same problem check your power supply, but then again you can boot in safe mode check your graphic card too.
 
lol @ Archer all the reviews are saying that the 400's are way to heavy on power and heat which is what i kinda wanna reduce on.
5870 looking really tempting now and as u say the drivers seem to be have improved and with constant updates keeps the system going
as well. most game tests show that the 480 only has a slight adv over the 5870

i cant believe this forum is converting me from Nvidia to ATI .... someone somewhere is rolling over in his grave!!!!

On a serious note, it just comes down to who is better value for money the day you buy. Last card I has was also the 8800 320mb version. I have no loyalties to manufacturers.
 
Well just before you upgrade and spend your savings on an awesome card :)
You may aswell take yours apart and clean out the fan and heat zinc, maybe put a little oil in your fan, than see if it fixes the problem.
 
i was planning on doing that tonight nakedpeanut, i normally use a compressor to clear dust out about every 4-6 months so inside of pc is gen clear of all muck.
