PC game suggestions for a noob...

It wasn't the fantasy elements of Skyrim that put me off so much as the tedious character micromanagement. It made the whole game dull. That, and I got so distracted with side quests that I totally forgot what the main storyline was meant to be and wandered aimlessly for a while before moving on.

This is why I prefer fallout over elder scrolls, but for me its just a case of too much of that in each and every fscking game.

Huh?

If you're talking about the RPG elements then it's very surprising, because Skyrim has one of the easiest and shallowest RPG systems for an RPG. Most other people complain because there's actually not enough depth to the character management.

Skyrim isn't an rpg in any real sense. It still wants you to devote extraordinary amounts of time to petty tasks like learning how to do woodwork and mix herbs and I couldn't be bothered to go through any of that.
 
Got FakeFactory installed now. Loving 3d Ep1 with ff textures. It's like I never played it before. The HUD effect is stunning.
 
UnrealT & the all the bioshock stuff is on sale over at steam.

Don't think unreal will suit dj but the Bioshock inf DLCs might.
 
Unreal Tournament 2004 would be a good shooter. Still extremely popular, probably more popular that UT3?

Yup, don't think there are that many living walkthroughs around nowadays, too many other things occupying the memory.
 
The last good rpg-like games were Balder's Gate 2, Fallout 2, Deus Ex 1, Bioshock 2, The Witcher.

The newer versions are too easy and consoli****ed. Maybe Dragon's Age 1 and The Witcher 2 are still ok... but it's just not the same.
 
Not sure if these have been mentioned but I've listed a few of my favourites.

FPS: Borderlands (1 & 2), F.E.A.R. (I'm not a massive fan of the online play in this category but you might be. In that case, CoD always popular)

Driver Sim: Loads to choose from here. My personal favourite is any F1 title (but each to their own...).

RPG: You really are spoilt for choice here too! Diablo, Batman, Path of Exile, The Witcher, Torchlight 2 all popular...

MOBA's: Heroes of Newerth, League of Legends, DOTA. (You need to tolerate a load of uncouth and obnoxious 'tards in this category though. Just warning you)

If you looking old school though, then...

Command & Conquer (Generals & Zero Hour), Call of Duty (the WW2 editions), Quake 3 Arena, The Witcher 1, Medal of Honour: Allied Assault (one of my all time best!).

You forgot the Mass Effect series. The first one had the best story in a game for me.

Titan Quest and its expansion is also really good and will work on older systems. Very polished action RPG. I just played a character from normal through to legendary mode last week and it still felt like a great experience.
 
Very hard cat to please OP. Have you tried the Total War series? I enjoyed Total War Napoleon and Empire. Seeing those cannonballs zing by or seeing the impact of grapeshot on advancing troops, is a pleasure savoured. There are two modes for the game, one is the map where you move your troops and erect buildings, move your gentlemen, priests and rakes. A rake is a saboteur and assassin, a gentleman is good for stability in your towns, researches at colleges and universities, a priest quells the masses need for religion and can convert them to another. A general can erect forts, boost morale in combat, order troops. Once you are being attacked or elect to attack, the games switches to combat mode, which is utterly gorgeous. I see my enthuasism has run away with me a bit.

RUST will get your heart racing pretty well.
It engages you into flight or fight mode in a pretty real way as items can quickly be lost or gained.

The game is not for sissies though, you will start to fear all other players you see in the game.

You will also lose hope in humanity as people betray you, stab you in the back, leave you to die, or just plain rob you repeatedly.
