PC Locking up: Plz Help

Your Core0's sensor seems to be calibrated incorrectly.

Let us know whether it's stable for half an hour, then we'll take it from there.

Create a new text file called Heat.bat, and put in the three lines below:

:heat
dir C: /s
goto heat

Save it and then run it as many times as you need to till the CPU is running at 100%. If you have more than one disk then replace C: with that disk.

I use this approach because it is simple, and because it stresses the second hottest component in the system, namely the HDD, which gives a more realistic view of temperatures....

I have been running Prime95 for 5 minutes now, CPU's reading at 100% and the temperature has not gone above 58degres.

There are a few discrepancies between CPUID Hardware Monitor and Speedfan haha, check the picture out. I will leave this running for about half an hour, if it doesn't lock up and freeze, could that mean there might be something wrong with my PCI - E slot?

Why is your fan spinning so slowly, mine is spinning at 2700 RPM??

Well let me give you the temperatures from hottest to coolest in my system:

Graphics card: 57C, idle
Northbridge: 54C
Southbridge: 53C
CPU: 45C (hottest core), idle
Hard drive: 41C (hottest drive), busy copying to it as I type this

Pretty sure the power supply would get hotter than a hard drive :p

EDIT: Graphics card just fell down to 47C, should've mentioned that I'd been playing Crysis just before :D

After half an hour of running the test, as well as chatting via Xfire and watching a movie, I have had zero lock ups or freezes.

Touching on my fan speeds, I have all the side panels off the rig, my CPU cooler is a Gigabyte G Power II. And i believe it is maxed out at 1600. Directly behind that in the Aurora 570 is a 120mm fan both sucking air out.

I don't get it. The thing seems stable now. I will leave the test running for another half an hour while watching my movie. Then I will go straight into COD4 and run that for half an hour to see if I can get the thing to lock up again.

Where else could the problem lie? Software? PCIE port? HD?

Yeah, second was a filler for "a component that is sometimes overlooked when tracking down heating issues". My hottest component is something running at 122, with my GPU at 74 :eek:

HDD is waaaaay down, much lower than second :)

I think I have ruled out heat as the cause, and I don't think my CPU is sitting too wrong. After 40 minutes at 100% usage, the CPU is still only sitting on 60degrees according to Speedfan.

I think we can safely rule out CPU overheating :) Try download Memtest and run that, or hirens boot disk also has several memory tests.

It may be a HDD. What we have not tested is your GPU. Try play a game where you can see the GPU temp and the game, i.e. a window and see what happens.

It may be a driver or DX issue.....
 
Try using CoreTemp or RealTemp, SpeedFan isn't always accurate.

But we cannot rule out an overheating graphics card either, try downloading RivaTuner or GPU-Z.
 
I have rivatuner and I am running my GPU fan at 85% the whole time. According to Speefan while playing COD4 my GPU didn't go above 55degrees. I will test it that right now.

I have rivatuner, let me game while watching giva and GPU Z and then we see what happens.

The drive I am using is a W.D. Raptor. After gaming if I get a lock up again I will then format onto a normal Seagate 640 gig. See if that doesn't solve my problems haha.

Alright one full hour of Prime95 not so much as a stutter. Even with my movie it didn't lag haha.

Anyways, I will do some gaming now, see if I am still having issues. And GPUZ will run in the background.
 
Okay so I been playing for at least an hour, and I got a bit wrapped up in the game and forgot to keep checking my temps haha. Stupid thing still locking up on me.

I will pop in my spare drive and do a fresh install there. I will also swap out my Asus 9800GTX for the Zotac 9800GTX see if that isn't causing the problem.

Sigh at this pc.
 
Alright so I was getting excited but alas my problem is still not sorted out.

After a clean install on a new hard drive, with a new graphics card as well the PC still locked up on me. I will however admit that the FPS seemed to be alot more stable with the new HD and Gfx card. However +- half an hour into the game it just freezes and I get a ringing noise coming through my speakers/headphones.

I am out of ideas as to what would cause this thing to lock up.

Leaves Motherboard and RAM. Sooooo.....

Remove all other cards (if you have any), reset the BIOS to standard settings and download Memtest. Burn it to a disk and then test your RAM. If that does not work then you need to test your MOBO (which is not easy)....
 
I will downgrade my drivers now, I am using the 190.62 I will install the 190.38's now.

I also wanted to know do Asus boards use more power? I was running an Intel Bone Trail 2 DX48BT2 board, and outside of changing board, nothing has changed in the rig. (okay so I have a stick of DDRII but that aint the problem)

According to Aerocool's website, I only need 450watts of power for the rig I have, Asus on the other hand say I need 700 watts. Thoughts?

I have just downgraded my drivers and will test one more time with earlier drivers. I will also do the memtest later as well. During Prime95 I didn't get a single issue at all and apparently that tests memory as well lol.

So over tech issues!
 
As per usual haha. Nothing seems to work. I rolled back the GFX drivers from 190.62 to 190.38 and still getting the same problem. Admitedly with this card and HD the FPS is alot more stable.

I don't have blank cd's so I will fetch in the morning and then run memtest and see if if that is my problem
 
I would hazard a guess that just leaves your PSU, also are you running on a UPS or straight out of eskom?
