your last sentence is the reason for me being a bit annoyed at the industry at the moment. sure consoles play their part etc. having said that, we must admit that since the introduction of 3D graphics cards, the gap between PC and console has only widened more and more. Your dual 5870 setup compared to a consoles 3D capabilities is like comparing President Zuma to Jessica Alba in a beauty contest.
now my real gripe comes in when i see games being held back specifically so that the PC vs console graphics aren't that much far apart.... since when was the gaming industry interested in holding back so the fat kid can catch up? this may be me being dramatic but i honestly feel that gaming is being held back tremendously by consoles. when the PS3 was released Sony said that they wanted it to have a 10 year lifespan... that's just lol ...
Any example of this ? Multiplats including Crysis 2 will draw every bit of power it can from a pc configuration while be watered down for console? There were launch delays of pc titles but only because of fear of piracy on the pc version ...MW2 is an example.
The exclusives argument is two fold.... on a PS3 you'll get the Metal gear franchise etc. God of War3 etc. etc. but you don't get Mass Effect 2 which blows all those away (in my opinion)... the exclusives thing forces you to get two consoles.
Well we were talking about pc vs console....so it was a broader comparison, but you are right, console is further religated by 'console' exclusives...the benefit for consoles though is that you can look at the exclusive line-up (and library) and choose the preferred console...the tipping factor though is the quantity of exclusives...console has far more exclusives than pc (i'm talking about a single console vs absolute pc exclusives, ME isn't since it's on xbox)...and btw, good game, but definitely arguable about it being the best game (especially when comparing it to a game that hasn't launched yet...i.e. GoW3)
for what your getting you are overpaying... the PS3 graphics processor and hard drive is a joke... even the 250gb is tiny.
Not sure you wanted a response, but i'm sure you are aware that the PS3 launched 3 years ago...hardly a joke for the gpu or 2.5" hdd...with regards to the graphics, have you played Uncharted 2 ? God of War 3 demo ? Heavy Rain demo ? Seen some of the Crysis2 PS3 screen grabs...REALLY IMPRESSIVE...on the hdd, why would u need a 500gb drive in a gaming console ?
i have windows 7, no issues here to be honest.... even if you do have driver issues, it takes a few hours to sort out
I have windows 7 as well, and i do sufficient gaming on my pc, and experienced driver issues...i can give examples, but anyone that has a pc knows that it's not necessary...so you're an exception, but how many games do you play a month and what set up do you have...try with a machine that doesn't have intel processor and mobo, Cosair RAM, Seagate Hdd's...
that is such a silly statement. look at WoW, the community is gigantic... people who own PC's have so many options when it comes to connecting to people. we aren't forced to use the PSN like console owners are. in fact, the PC community is so much bigger than the console community online there's no comparison.
Similar to your windows 7 comment above, there are exceptions to every rule...WoW is gigantic, but i'm talking about experiences i have in SA on PC and console...i've been to PC lans in the mid-90's...not one in the last 10 years...console lans, monthly....online community is huge for consoles (even in SA) compared to pc...check out the local ps3 or xbox forums and show me a pc gaming forum that compares...e.g. right now there is almost 200 logged on users on ps3za...most ever was 576 users logged on in jan 2010...
when a PC game is old it sells for R100 which is still a third of the price of a second hand console game..... SECOND hand
Guys sell 2nd hand pc games on teh forum (or more accurately, try) and average price is R50....that's assuming u can even sell them...wish i could sell Mass Effect, FarCry2, MW2, Spore...the DRM or licencing doesn't allow for it...there's a few more games i have that i can't sell, only installed once and played once because of the DRM...
as a multimedia centre my PC is far superior to a PS3 ... the range of software and options far outweigh a PS3
Is your PC connected to your lounge screen ? (No ..then it doesn't serve anyone except 1 person for viewing multimedia and in my home viewing media is a social activity)
Is it used by most of the ppl in your home and in varying ways ? (Yes...then there is obviously going to be tons of fight whether kid does project on pc, mom does e-mail, dad does work or john watches Batman)
Is it more expensive ? (Generally won't get any decent media centre pc for under R5000)
Requires more maintainance ? (Upgrades every 2 years or less, can be costly and unnecessary)
Costs more ? (Gotta factor in the price of the operating system, media players, etc)
Does it do blu-ray ? (Nope? then not superior to PS3)
So yeah, a PC might give you a preference of players and might have wider support of formats, but there's so many more factors to a multimedia centre than just the formats that can be decoded.
couldn't disagree more. i have bioshock 1 on my pc, the amount of immersion and intensity felt when playing a FPS with a mouse and keyboard can't be replicated using an xbox controller. there is a huge difference graphics wise too. competitive gaming was born on the PC.... starcraft 1 is still going strong and when starcraft 2 comes out it will be played online in mass.
you can't say that console gaming is "the NOW" when PC games look better, perform better and facilitate the whole gaming experience much better.
I own bioshock 1 on PC and PS3 (but only played it complete on PC and enjoyed every minute of it, same is true for Mass Effect, left for dead, Fable, Wolfenstein, Shift, WiC) ...and yes, pc gaming can be immersive..i wasn't saying it wasn't...any gaming is, including handheld....I was saying the overall experience lacks nothing on a console (other than graphics), preference here, but i prefer the console controller to pc keyboard and mouse even though i'm more proficient with the kb/mouse (enough to wage a bet that i can beat just about anyone on this forum in quake live)

The only thing missing from a controller is being able to turn swiftly....my aiming on the controller is as good if not better than with a mouse (that should give you some confident in the quakelive challenge)
If that is true, pls look at gaming stats....all of the sales figures sit in the consoles favour...but that doesn't count for experience right ? right...but my personal experience and i can show you threads from weeks back saying i absolutely cannot praise the pc gaming expeirence anymore when compared to console for various reasons...graphics is cool, but u need a high end machine that is stable...and then u have adjustable graphics, so competitively (online), guys are running directx glitches to remove grass and textures so ppl don't stand a chance (especially snieprs) of hiding...perform better ? only if you have a top end machine ...and the last point of facilitating a better gaming experience, u'll need to expand on that, cos i don't think it's true...
