I saw another version of the adapter at a place called Budget Technologies in the Northgate Shopping Centre today (JHB). I can't remember what the product name was, exactly, but it certainly wasn't the Elan - it came in nice packaging, for a good start! :D

Does anyone know of an alternative supplier of PCI PCMCIA adapters for the 3G card. I purchased the Elan card from Vodashop, as advised. After many frustrating hours I consulted the Elan website and discovered that the card will not work on a dual-processor motherboard. Does anyone know of a fix for the problem. Windows detects the card, but there appears to be an IRQ conflict (with no option of adjusting the resource scheduling).

There is an card based on the Ricoh chipset that works well with the 3G cards, but I don't know who would supply it. Anyone?

On the dual CPU issue, is there no patch available on the Elan WEbsite?

For Windows there is no diffs...Would LOVE to see how 2k/XP will handle Dual Core+HT ! That is 4 CPUs - Over the limit !!!

Have you tried the [post=290007]latest driver version...[/post]seems to be a fix specifically for Hyperthreading, but that's not exactly the same as dual-processor, worth a try...?

Though I'd give u some feedback. I have tried the latest driver, as well as the mecer adapter. Neither attempts were succesful.

Will keep on trying.

Is there any USB to PCMCIA adaptors in the market which support 32-bit?

There are a number of PCI to PCMCIA adaptors available.

We've tested quite a few and selected the Elan Digital Systems P111 card (http://www.elandigitalsystems.com/adapter/p111.php) for use with our 3G data cards.

These will be available shortly through the normal retail channel. RRP should be under R300.

Please be aware of cards that extend the PCMCIA connector with a cable to the front of the PC. 32bit cards (most new cards including the 3G cards) will not work or will be very erratic in such a setup due to the higher bandwidth requirements. These extended adaptors are only recommended for 16bit PCMCIA cards.

This implies plugging the 3G card into the back of a PC, so keep in mind you need to get to the back of your system.

P111 card and dual processors

I'm trying to install a 3G card on an HP DL385 dual processor machine and unfortunately the P111 card will not work. Elan site mentions this as a known issue (something about not being able to assign the card an IRQ because of some chip that controls IRQ's on dual processor machines)

Does anyone have information about another PCI-PCMCIA bridge adapter that you have managed to get working that I could possible check out?

(ambience, Sybaritic is out of the Addonics one and not getting any more in)

I'm getting pretty desperate here so am even prepared to look at a 3G router if anyone has some recommendations.

thanx!

Hi St3ph,

I personaly have not heard of any other adaptors which might be suitable and available in SA.
I think the router would be your best bet, they look nice 'n simple I'm sure you'll be up in minutes -plug 'n surf!
You will also have greater flexibility for your future needs. - Not the cheapest option, but hey it's christmas :p
good luck

There are cards available based on the Ricoh chipset. Reports on these cards have been very good.

I recently bought one from Pinnacle and it worked without drivers.

Not that I'm aware of. And even if they did exist they would not work with the 3G data card. The data card functions as a USB host and will clash with any other device also functioning as a USB host, such as an USB adaptor.

usb to pcmcia adapter elan systems

http://www.elandigitalsystems.com/adapter/u132.php

looks like a pcmcia to usb adapter specifically for 3g datacard/modem type cards anyone got a line on a local supplier -

also along the lines of defining the adapter one would think that usb to pcmcia means "usb(this is the end that plugs into pc-male) to pcmcia(accepts pcmcia device/female)" ie the adapter changes your usb accepting port to a pcmcia accepting "port" yet googling usb to pcmcia yeild 10million sites that have a pcmcia card with usb (female) ports... semantics...

It was actually Elan Digital Systems that told me about the USB incompatibility, so they must have done some kind of workaround.

We'll get some of these to test.

Problem with 3G card not seen in Elan PCI to PCMCIA adapter

I'm using the Elan PCI to PCMCIA adapter with the Vodafone 3G card (Option Globetrotter Quad). I've downloaded the latest Elan driver (would not work before I had done this!). The system works very well but often I have to eject the card and re-insert before it is seen. Once it's been found it's fine till I power off. I've tried re-scanning for hardware changes using the Device Manager in XP - this doesn't work either. Any advice?

U may have to load the drivers manually, or add the hardware manually.

hey Bug, welcome to the myadsl.

I have always had a similar problem to this. I can not aboot my pc with the card inserted into the ELAN P111 adpator. I have learnt over the last year to always eject the data card before a startup boot or reset boot. A bit of a niggle but nothing serious. My laptop on the other hand is perfectly ok to boot with the card inserted into the PCMCIA adaptor.
It might be related to your motherboard or bios settings. The Elan website might have the bug listed somewhere.
My sugestion is to always boot without the card inserted.

Thanks ant101. I'll try and fiddle with the BIOS. I agree it's not too serious. Just some info that might interest someone on this forum. My signal was pretty weak on 2 bars out of 5. I bought a LPDA A0021 antenna from Poynting Antennas and I now have a full 5 signal strength.

PCMCIA to PCI convertor for 3GIburst PCMCIA Card

I am looking for a convertor that will allow me to use an Vodacom 3G or Iburst PCMCIA card in a normal PC. So basicaly thats a PCMCIA to PCI convertor.

One of my suppliers has this in stock:
PTC1010R Sunix PTC1010 1 Port PCMCIA to PCI Card Converter Ideal for 3G users R 199

But I can not find anything on the Sunix website or on google about this card, and I was wondering if its what I am looking for. If anyone has any advice or solutions for this, please could you let me know.

Also, the PCMCIA card routers than you can purchase, do you know if they can be used with Iburst and Vodacom 3G?

The Elan adapter available from Vodacom (read: Vodashop) will work with the 3G card. I have used mine for close on 9 months without any hassles. I have in the meantime purchased a router and dont really use it anymore. Can't comment on the compatibility with IBurst or new HSDPA cards.

Mine is up for sale if you are interested.
