Anybody have one? Either the normal one or the Steel.

Forum seems quiet with regards to it.

Was thinking of getting one. I know it's not a necessity, but just for fun :p

That topic might be a little vague. For those who don't know, I'm referring to the Pebble smart watch.

Old man has one, loves it due to the fact of not having to charge everyday, weekly charging.
He had the plastic one, now he has the metal one.

Yeah I've heard about the great battery life. Was hoping to get some personal experiences from people. The reviews rave about it :)

Yeah, I have a standard Pebble Black - my wife loved it so much, she bought herself one too.
They are now cheaper from Pebble and they ship to South Africa - getpebble.com

The awesome part is that they are compatible with both iPhone and Android.
Works great on both.
* 7 day battery life - as apposed to MAYBE 2 days on modern colour smart watches.
* All notifications/calls on your wrist - just gets awkward in meetings when you keep watching your watch ;) people think you are in a rush.
* Can now be used as an activity tracker - 24/7 - the activity tracking runs in the background without affecting the other apps - can also be used as a swim watch that tracks laps etc through swim.com app.
* You can see the screen in bright daylight!
* you can load up to 8 apps - ranging from Foursquare, a compass app, Yelp, etc - many apps to remote control devices as well even GoPro cameras.
* Sheesh, can go on and on.
Oh, and you dont need to have the phone around to use it as a watch.
Its also water proof up to 50m.
* you can design your own watchfaces too :)
* Many watch straps available for customising the watch

Pebble Steel is also cheaper now - had I known they would launch the Steel beginning this year I would have gone for it.
I dont really swim with my pebble, but to give you an idea on durability - I wear it every day (for the last 10 months) and so far NO noticeable scratches on the polycarbonate screen, and absolutely no issues from a durability side.

Its really in its own league from a smartwatch point of view.

:)

Thanks for taking the time with that nice response :) You have basically just confirmed everything I have read. Only thing I was not sure about, was the durability. But, seems that it's also not an issue :)

Only thing that a bit dodge, is apparently the latest version of the Pebble app on Android. It's getting pretty much only 1 star reviews. How's your experience with the app?

Cool :)
Firstly, I am OS neutral - I like Apple OS and I like Android - Have a Nexus 4 - the worlds most awesome phone - still
I have a iPhone and run the pebble on it - I had a few issues initially during the beginning of the year, but those have been fixed with Firmware and Software updates - IOS8 also seems to have been improved and runs much better.

To your question:
My wife runs the pebble on her S5 without issues - NOT once has she had to re-start the app, pebble or phone in the 10 months - she had a Galaxy S3 before the S5 - 0 issues - well, she had to restart her phone anyway - just saying no issues ;) - the phones give more problems :)

Understand though that the architecture of Apple and Android is different - so there are a few features that will benefit Apple and a few that will benefit Android - on Apple I cannot reply to messages from the watch - due to Apples restrictions. On Android however, there is an app that allows you to reply to messages with canned responses. Apple has a slightly better notification system. BUT the Android system has been improved and now natively supports Whatsapp notifications.

They continuously improve the phone apps and the watch firmware - great service.
I am just sorry I cannot give you a personal experience and comparison with the Android WEAR watches....thinking of one at the moment, but the fact they ONLY work on Android is a bit off-putting and limiting.

Do yourself a favour and buy the watch from the website should you decide - much cheaper and takes about 4 days to get the watch if you order on a weekend! - have it couriered - not too expensive either.

out of curiosity, how much did you guys spend on import duties?

Thanks man, sounds great. Not too interested in Android Wear anyway at the moment. It's too expensive and I don't want anything that lasts only a day. :o

As the guy above asked, what did you pay on taxes?

Got mine on the kickstarter campaign. Really been enjoying it.

My only gripe is that there are sometimes issues when going out of range of your phone where the BT paring isn't always seamless on return. Fixing ranges from a power cycle of the pebble and/or power cycle of the phone or in extreme cases complete forget and re-pair.

My Android friend complains that the app is unstable, I haven't really had issues on iOS.

If you are worried about scratches gadgetwraps are cheap and easy to apply.

Got mine last night, took literally 1 day to ship :D

Heavily impressed so far and I did not even have to pay duty taxes :D

I have small wrists :/
