Penalties for excessive electricity use

EDIT: Why is there no forum on that site you advertise? Retorical question, we already know the answer. Which product on that website are you trying to peddle?

This is the biggest and most laughable misconception on this forum... from the signatures of various members on this website I could assume most of you are members of the DA or the AWB but I do not draw these conclusions.

So let me repeat... I have no affiliation with the website in my signature at all. It is merely my way of countering all the negativity we have in this country at the moment. We have a global economic downturn and many people are unjustifiably blaming a lot of the effects of this on an ignorant incompetent government...

I am under no illusions that none of you have ever been curious enough to have a read through the pages on there but that it not the point. Some members "push" religion in their sigs... I "push" my love of this country.

There used to be such a thing as being PROUDLY SOUTH AFRICAN.... I still am and hence my desire to spread good news about this country.

By the way your sarcastic post does go off on a tangent and miss the point of this thread. Yes, Eskom has issues - we all established that repeatedly a while ago... the penalties are an attempt to sort these problems out. No one, including Eskom nor the government are denying that they made a mistake but now we need to find solutions....

Do you regard the DA and AWB as equivalent?

If they made mistakes then shouldn't they be fired? Shouldn't there be some accountability? Shouldn't the policies that led to those mistakes be reexamined?

My "tangant" illustrates my feelings of being held responsible for their ****ups.

You'll just be branded something when he doesn't have an answer.

Is that what happens in your company?

I recall someone posting on here that they made a mistake at their company and they were punished by being forced to buy beers (and yes I better cover all bases as I know what you guys are like with quoting exert of a post to go off on a tangent, so I will say myself that I am fully aware that the consequences of mistakes differ and not all lead to a power crisis).

Are you aware of the policies not having been re-examined?

I wrote a letter of apology and placed it next to you, feel free to read it when you think it's safe to remove your head that's buried beneath the sand.

If the "mistake" was of the magnitude of Eskom's then yes, I would think that'd happen in most companies who are actually accountable to their customers and the market, unlike government-controlled monopolies like Eskom. This wasn't just one isolated incident but a series of "mistakes" over many years on the part of both Eskom and government. Let's face it in other countries the CEO and cabinet minister involved would've either resigned or been forced out long ago.

There's been no evidence of policies being re-examined, this crisis has been going on for years and we still faced the situation earlier in the year of power being cut to the mines because Eskom can't manage its coal stockpiles properly.

Unfortunately our views are so different that I am afraid we are virtually on different planets so I doubt you placed it next to me...

I do not think I will be leaving my happy place (never heard it called sand before:rolleyes:) any time soon though. It is a lifestyle not a passing phase... I can only hope yours is a passing phase for the benefit of your health...

For everyone's health I hope the government gets their **** together.

While this ding-dong is going on, do we any idea how allowed consumption will be calculated?

My (personal) concern will be if it's based on actual usage over a period, as I've put a fair amount into energy management systems over the last 5 years. For me to cut 10% is going to be tough.

A system based on known parameters, (number of occupants, services, etc.) would make more sense.

I'm sure this article has been on here before but it pretty much explains it the best... they are rightly targeting high electricity consumers and as it so happens these tend to be houses in affluent areas.

Just out of interest our household of two adults and one nine year old boy uses on average 500kWh per month... would be interesting to hear what others on here consume.

I was hoping we have details on how it will be measured but from your link it does not seem so.

Eskom did not respond to questions on Wednesday regarding how it would implement the new system.

Running 2x 28000btu aircons 24/7 burning through about 3000kw per month and keeping outside lights and elec fence always on to keep skelms out. Lance is an idiot btw;)

IMO the market should be deregulated and opened up and then let the market set the price with competition etc. Obviously it wouldn't be possible immediately due to Eskom's entrenched monopoly but this should be the ultimate goal.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but there's more than one reasaon that you're wrong. Firstly, a large part of the reason that we're currently suffering a shortage of generating capacity is that when Eskom management said "We need to build more capacity now", Government said "Don't worry, we're introducing competition so other people will generate the extra electricity". Two major problems with this plan, though. One: It took Government some EIGHT years to actually get around to finalising and publishing the proposed regulations under which one could compete with Eskom, and Two: who in their right mind would try to compete with the world's lowest cost electricty generator?

Household of 2 adults, approx. 400kWh in summer, in winter a bit more.

The talk was that households, irrespective of size and number of occupants, would be allowed 700kWh per months (1). Usage above that would be considered excessive use and would incur penalties.
No allowance for a home office or home business situation.

(1) The interview was with H Zille, mayor of Cape Town, who also intimated that Cape Town's limit might be double, i.e. 1400kWh. Why and how, don't ask me.

And I hope by African you mean someone from Africa as I am white! :)

Unfortunately your response is typical of that of a "previously privileged" African... the "wonderful world class" (although I will argue this as the previous government had a history of gross underspending on infrastructure) Eskom which was handed across only had to provide electricity for a minuscule privileged portion of the population...

The current utility could probably also power just the elite suburbs with no problems...

I know you are a whitey!

When the ANC government got Eskom for free it was perfectly capable to generate power for its users (with more than ample reserve supply). The ANC set out to connect all of the PDPs and they set out to grow the economy at 6 percent.

Common sense would dictate that you ensure that your generating capacity stays inline with your other targets. The ANC did not achieve the two targets (not all peeps are connected and growth was approx. 4.5%), but still they succeeded in frakken up a world class power utility.

How do you explain that sunshine?
