Slightly off topic, but I am surprised that tubeless MTB tyres now cost the same as your average car tyre. Does not make sense.

Crazy. I used to be into bicycles as a kid. I can't believe how it's become one of the most expensive pastimes/hobbies/sports.

Yeah, my father's cousin has a bike (not sure if a MTB) which cost over 50k to put together. His old bike he sold for 25k and then it was stolen from the new owner.

Personally I stick to bikes at the entry level side of the spectrum. No more that R10k. Just did 3210km in the 133 that I have my current one. It really does not have to be expensive.

I'm extremely happy with my Falken ZE912s. They really show what poor quality tyres were in front previously. The front left was quite worn on the inner side, but they've always felt similar to me through their 12,000km of use. The wheelspin was always the same. It seems they just couldn't grip well in the dry, in line with the reviews (Maxtrek Ingens A1).

These are the Falkens that were on the back in front now, the 225s (10mm less than stock) with 12,000km, and they feel incredible. Like a new car. I don't have much experience with tyres, but I have not been able to get any wheelspin like I used to. They grip to the road no matter what I do, the car feels faster and even gear changes/clutch feel smoother. I never minded road noise, but these are much quieter, and much softer too, something which was very noticeable with the lowered stiffer suspension.

The Falkens were rated very well for dry conditions, so their performance in the wet remains to be seen. I'm sure anything would be better than the Maxtreks though, and I was even confident with them - something which is quite scary!

At this stage I see no reason to not get these tyres in the future, and continue paying less than half of the premium brands. When I get 235s, it'll be even better. Though I would like to try The premium brands to really know.

Happy with mine for the 3-4km i drove them from Palm Tyres to work on kinda bumpy and slow main road :p Agree, feels like a new car! Only paid R200 for wheel alignment too, so 4k in total for 4 tyres with W/A. Will go there again one day. My old man's company used to use them for the 20 years they were in business.

The more I get into tyres, the more self justification I see of one's purchases. Not doubting you guys but it makes it extremely difficult hearing one thing and then seeing another elsewhere.

The Falkens just seem like a better tyre. They are not an economy brand. More reviews.

Especially if I can get the ZE914s, which I'm enquiring about.

I will enquire about the Achilles.

Don't worry, I understand the reservation.

Thing is people who have never tried them will have the worst to say about them because "super expensive brand must be better because more Money".

I took the plunge and tried them. Will do it again.

Also remember the UK has a very different climate to ours.

I've ridden on motorcycle tires that the okes in the UK rave about endlessly and I found utterly unbearable and even dangerous.

Also you mentioned road noise. Massive improvement over the Continentals I had on before.

Money aside are they as good as the best of the best top brand? Probably not.

Are those fancy tyres three times better as their three times higher price suggests? Definitely not.

Just a quick update to say that I'm very pleased with the wet performance of the Falkens. I can't fault them, though my tyre experience is limited.

Likewise, also happy in the wet. Disclaimer : Probably even less tyre experience on my side

How does one really know though? If one pushes them to their limits, one risks going too far?
