Hi all

I'm needing to fit decent new front tyres, 235/40/R18 but I'll go up to 245/40/R18. Don't mind spending a bit.

I'm considering Michelin Pilot Sport 3s for a combination of performance/handling/ride quality/longevity. Quite pricey at R3,000 a pop but they are rated for high mileage.

What do you guys go for on your sportier cars? Any advice? Michelin, Pirelli, Continental, Bridgestone, Firestone, Goodyear, Yokohama...

Thanks in advance.

Pirelli, Conti has nice grip, low road noise, but didn't last that long

Half the price of the premium brands, can you tell me a little more?
Ran them on my stage 2 Leon cupra with no hassles at all. Recommended to me by Colin at rivonia tyres. He knows his stuff.

Bridgestone for a high performace car Pirelli and Yokahama for sporty cars and whatever is a good price and a good brand for slow cars.

+1
Have these in 235 45 17
Very impressed and for the price it's an excellent tyre

Interesting. I enjoy my driving and get some front spin being FWD, so it makes sense spending less and replacing more regularly. What do you think?

Just noticed my rears are 225/40/R18. I would like 245s at the back too. Should I put the 225s on the front and finish them, and get 245s now for the back?

Nah, change the fronts and send them to the rear once you've exhausted those rears.

Think I'm steering away from Achilles/cheap tyres after reading some threads on the Audi, VW and Ford forums. Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetrics seem to be popular, bit cheaper than Michelins.

These Michelin Pilot Super Sports look good too - http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre/Michelin/Pilot-Super-Sport.htm. 'Ultra High Performance' vs the 'High Performance' of the Pilot Sport 3s.

Would Ultra mean they're softer and would wear faster? I'm looking for something that wouldn't wear too fast with a fair bit of spirited driving.

Also double the price of the Achilles and cheaper tyres.

Nah, change the fronts and send them to the rear once you've exhausted those rears.

Current fronts needing replacing have already worn down to the tread indicators in some places, so they won't be good/legal (insurance) for the back.

Checked current tyres, fronts are Maxtrek Ingens A1 235, rears are Falken ZE912 225s which are actually rated pretty well - http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre/Falken/ZE912.htm.

So neither are quality tyres, cheaper and around the same price as the Achilles, respectively.

The Falken replacement, the ZE914, seems very well rated and I'm going to check if they're available - http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre/Falken/ZE914.htm.

I'll then probably put the rear Falken 225s on the front, and the new 235s on the back.

If you want the best (I've had both of these on my cars):

Michelin PS3 (review)
Goodyear F1 Asym 2 (review)

Otherwise use these as a baseline against cheaper tyres to see whether the cost saving is worth it.

Please see my post above, Pilot Super Sports seem better? Does being Ultra High Performance mean they're softer and wear quicker?

I'm willing to spend, but I'm not sure double the price is justifiable with well rated cheaper tyres like the Falkens, above?

What car is it?
Usually wider tyres should go to the back. Are the rims the same width?

I would stick to the PS3 as they are more readily available and you probably won't see any significant difference when compared with the Super Sports.

I recently put the PS3's on my E90 3-Series M-Sport and they are brilliant - the previous owner had just put Achilles 2233 things on before I bought the car, but having just come from another 3-Series M-Sport, I could notice the difference in road noise and grip so I decided to replace them with the PS3.

My previous 3-Series had the F1 Asym 2 all round so I can testify to both those and the PS3 being excellent all round tyres - obviously they aren't the cheapest but they will maintain performance throughout their life-cycle.

What car are you looking to put these on?

A4 B7 2.0T. 162kW, sport suspension/lowered.

Yes they are. Perhaps I should stick to 235 for the front and 245 at the rear? After the 225s from the rear, which I'll put on the front, are done.

Nice to have your input after owning various premium tyres. I do want the Michelins, one can't put a price on safety and I'm on the road quite a bit.

My only concern is that I do enjoy torque most of the time the opportunity is given, so there will be more than usual wear in the front. Is it worth paying for Michelins if I'm going to be replacing more often than usual? Or should I rather go for the Falkens, which are well rated and half the price?
