After reading these two articles:

http://mybroadband.co.za/news/busin...ch-companies-with-awesome-employee-perks.html

I am still wondering how the industry competition for skilled software developers are benefitting us. Do companies offer Google-like perks? How are South African companies stepping up to the challenge of retaining their best people?

Or are all the best software developers destined to work for multinationals such as Amazon who is setting up shop in a big way in SA.

So what benefits do you get at your company? 13th cheque, concierge service, performance bonuses, day's off, etc.?

No benefits here...
Just thankful to have a job

I've joined a new company and was given a laptop and given a 4 year old laptop. Decent specs for that age and it has a separate GPU. Unfortunately no SSD. Also have to work on systems where the company use webform projects as standard and I prefer MVC. I have to mentor an intern who doesn't know very much so i'm not productive at all as I could work a couple of times faster working on my own.

Still I have a job so I am grateful.

Is there an echo in here?

Any developer that has time to play pool or that stupid table soccer game does not have enough work to do...

Haha, its a trap!!

No benefits like that for. Just a company that obliges me when I need something equipment wise...which is refreshing.

I'm just happy to know that I don't have to stress over where my next paycheck is coming from.

My previous company gave free breakfast, lunch and dinner, massages, swag and free coffee. My current company gives lunch once a week, free coffee, snacks, soda, free shuttle buses to various areas, and several really awesome parties each year.

I don't mind the perks, but there are many who would rather just be paid the money instead, or similarly there are companies that pay $30k a year less because they pay for $2000 worth of lunches and $100 worth of underwear folding per year.

I don't regard performance bonuses or 13th cheques as perks - that's just your comp - being paid should never be a perk.

Nothing.

Anything resembling a perk has been removed over the last 18 months.

Times are hard even though skills are scarce.

I get discounts on the Eurotunnel, cross channel ferries and SAA air tickets. But not because I'm a developer, but because the company is involved in the travel industry. I have only used cross channel ferry discount. Never used SAA. I don't think they can pay me enough to spend 9hrs+ on an SAA aircraft. :)

As developers we sell ourselves short. If we spend so much time and effort doing more than the 8 hours and kpi's on paper we should be negotiating share options. We need to take lesson from the finance boys.

Times are indeed hard...
I haven't been here long but this is what I have seen...

First the phones, they changed the VoIP phones over to a system where everyone has a PIN, and they are monitoring everything

Secondly the printer... they installed that Equitrac crap, and removed all separate printers, and now its one printer per office, and you cannot print a thing without Big Brother knowing about it

I am waiting with bated breath to see what fate awaits the internet access in this place...

The "perk" I appreciate most is the coffee trolley coming around every 2hours and Nescafe machines.

We have a coffee machine, except it serves an unknown brand of coffee, specially selected to "save money"
So like most, I bring in my own coffee and tea....

Our coffee machine serves nescafe gold but even that is meh coffee so I also bring my own. I skimp on many things in life but coffee is not one of them.
I only drink pure Arabic and Colombian coffee.

Yeah. We have a lot of consultants in the field and we have seen the end of company 3G cards, company cell phones, snacks, soft drinks. They have started skimping on internet access so we now have a cheap connection that falls over all the time which means they have clamped down big time on internet access.
