Pets

We have 1 cat and 1 African grey parrot. They get along well, the cat even sleeps on top of the cage in the sunshine :)

I too like to hover over the stove when the chicken is roasting...

I love how these animals have completely different personalities - even the hedgies are completely different. The one (from the photo) is really cheeky and gets aggressive then you get close to her, the other one is as laid back as can be, doesn't mind being handled, rarely rolls into a ball, etc.

I think it will be cat chow mein before a roasted chicken.
The parrot gave the cat a good nip when it was younger, ever since then they both have a mutual consensus on who is the boss :p

Up until last year I mostly had small pets:

70l cold water tank
100l tropical tank
Fancy rats

Prior to that we had Guinea pigs and Chinchillas as well.
You need to keep a herd of guinea pigs (3+) and they tend to breed like rabbits; can be problematic if you don't keep the genders separate.
Chinchillas were fairly easy to maintain; the most challenging was making sure that their habitat was maintained.

"Adopted" a cat, 2 budgies & 2 canaries and a rabbit for 14 months whilst the owner was on a sabbatical. Will never own birds or rabbits after that.

Was contemplating a hedgehog, but after chatting to a vet (rodent specialist), completely decided against it. Similar to guinea pigs, they carry salmonella and are much dirtier pets; let's just say they love to swim in their own urine.

Sad Sonic is sad.

Let's not allow salmonella to stop the thread. And I'll continue washing my hands after handling my filthy rodents (even though they are actually insectivores).

Two days ago I also became a hedgehog owner!

While it is true that they can carry Salmonella poisoning, the same is true for raw eggs and chickens. That is why you wash your hands afterwards. That said, the risk of poisoning is small and rare. Also, like Superjakes said, they aren't rodents. They are more closely related (phylogenetically) to elephants, so a rodent specialist would not necessarily be a specialist about hedgehogs. As for bathing in their urine....I have yet to see or hear about that among hedgehog owners. But then again, most hedgehog owners do not leave puddles of urine lying around for their pets to "bathe" in.

Aside from my new hedgie I also have Pomeranian and Pekingese dogs, as well as 11 Chickens :)

4 rescue cats. We love them to bits.
I am not a dog person.
Don't really like the idea of exotic pets for various reasons, also because of the huge responsibility of care involved.
Those hedgehogs are adorable.
